Hardy and Johnson miss practice; Johnson likely out vs. Miami

Both of the Panthers' starting defensive ends missed practice Thursday, and head coach Ron Rivera only expects one of them to be ready for Sunday's game at Miami.

Rivera said Charles Johnson "more than likely" will miss the game after spraining the MCL in his right knee on a leg whip by New England offensive tackle Marcus Cannon in the third quarter Monday night.

Johnson, who is second in the NFC with 8.5 sacks, could wind up missing multiple games. Panthers offensive guard Chris Scott, who sprained his knee against Atlanta on Nov. 3, has been out the past two games and has yet to practice this week.

Greg Hardy's knee injury does not appear to be as serious. Hardy participated in the team's morning walkthrough Thursday, but complained of soreness in his knee afterward and was held out of practice.

Rivera said it was a precautionary measure.

Coaches continue to evaluate young defensive ends Wes Horton, Mario Addison and Frank Alexander.

Rivera said the Panthers might use a situational platoon at Johnson's defensive end spot against the Dolphins. Horton is a stout run defender, Addison is a good edge rusher, and Alexander is an athletic player, Rivera said.

It would not be smart to take any chances with that MCL sprain. I won't be surprised if Johnson is out for weeks.

I like Wes Horton's game and Frank Alexander was a stud at OU. Those two and Mario Addison should be able to make some plays.

Alexander is the only DL that always gets his hands up if he can't get to the QB.

Speaking of that leg whip, any sign of a response from the league yet?
