Swap of linebackers a win-win for Panthers, Giants

Dan Connor was back on the Panthers' practice field Thursday, sporting the same No. 55 jersey he wore during his first stint in Charlotte.

Connor's signing completed what amounted to a "trade" of linebackers between the Giants and Panthers, whose first-year general manager Dave Gettleman spent more than a decade in the Giants' pro personnel department.

The Panthers basically exchanged Jon Beason for Connor, outside backer Chase Blackburn and a conditional, late-round pick next year.

To this point, it would appear -- based on the way Beason has played and galvanized the Giants' defense -- that New York got the better end of the deal.

But the fact is there was no place for Beason in Carolina following the emergence of Luke Kuechly, who is on a short list of the best middle linebackers in the league. Beason looked out of place at outside linebacker earlier this season, and was not pleased with his diminished role and playing time.

In Connor, the Panthers have a veteran who knows the organization and the defense, and will provide needed depth while Blackburn recovers from a foot injury.

Beason was excited to see Connor, waived from the Giants' injured reserve last week, land in Charlotte.

“Dan’s a great player, a hard-nosed player. Old-school. No tape, none of that stuff," Beason told Newsday.

"It’s crazy, you know. Chase was here, I was there, we swap out and now I was there, Dan was there, and now we’re swapping out. It just shows you how this league is very fluid. Good for him, I’m happy for him.”

I'm shocked "charlottean" hasn't gotten on here yet to tell us how great Hurney is.

What are the terms on this Beason trade? Could it be that increased Beason playing time/performance would bump the pick up a round? If so, win for Carolina.

Also, this Beason quote is epic. He is a brilliant, brilliant man:

"Chase was here, I was there, we swap out and now I was there, Dan was there, and now we’re swapping out.

How great hurney is? The new gm brought our cap down from 14million over to 12 million under and gave us 6 new starters on our best defense ever. 5 were rookies and I think 2 were even undrafted. He did all that in half a year by the way. Hurney had what 12 years

Posted by: Mike Win | Nov 14, 2013 2:21:49 PM

it's nearly 20 million under and he did that by restructuring contracts the same way hurney always has. hurney negotiated the contracts that way.

6 new starters? opening day it was 3, after some injuries it was more but it's still only 5 and that's including lotulelei who was the obvious gift in the draft. hurney's grandma would have known to take him there.

and yeah hurney only gave us the other 18 out of the 25 starters (3 specialists). the odd man being gano.

as for beason vs. conner. this makes sense for special teams purposes because beason wasn't exactly going to do that. but saying beason looked out of place at outside linebacker is ignoring the fact it was his first game back and first game at outside linebacker in a few years. he was a pro bowler at outside linebacker the year connor starterd for us and he played outside linebacker a year in college too. the trade was impatient, but it appears to have saved us 2 million dollars which is all that really matters to gettleman since he's riding the new guy waive by blaming the last guy for "cap hell" that doesn't exist.

come on observer you can do better with the facts. you have managed to help foster the most ignorant fan base in the NFL. cap hell? by restructuring contracts he just miraculously made it all disappear right? THATS CALLED STANDARD BUSINESS IN THE NFL YOU IGNORANT EFFS. there are something like 14 teams over next year's cap right now. it's NORMAL. the contracts aren't guaranteed. this isn't baseball. this isn't basketball. godfrey isn't getting paid 5 million next year and olsen isn't getting 7. he'll restructure those just like hurney would have had he been here.

the trade was impatient. beason's play in new york proved that. they saw his first games back and panicked. game 1 for new york he has 12 tackles. they almost won that game and they've won 3 straight after being waxed on the regular in their first 5 games.

you don't trade THAT for a 7th rounder just to save 2 million. THAT is worth every penny of 2 million.

It is what it is....John Fox.....laconic unlike the above.

Posted by: Whitecomet77 | Nov 14, 2013 3:16:59 PM

in the media he is.....in real life....not so much.

you can't debate/explain using brevity. support an opinion with facts.

or i could just say hurney was better and nothing more because that's exactly what the clowns that say "hurney was the worst" do. no support to that at all. i like facts too much not to spread them around the internet.

also not my fault i type a million words a minute.

I sucked as a sports reporter / In-over-my-head GM. Sorry charlotean I can not take your praise with a straight face.

Posted by: Marty Hernia | Nov 14, 2013 3:27:33 PM

Charlottean, your a clown. Our Gm picked up mike Mitchell whos playing at a pro bowl level. Flourence who sealed the win last week. Melvin white was and undrafted rookie and played very well last week against Boldin. and buddy getting from 14 million over to 12 under isn't easy to do while still trying to be competitive. I guess Robert lester and ted ginn are chop liver too. Like I SAID he's put in a lot of work in half a year. Stop hating, I wish panther fans would support their team for once.

"you can't debate/explain using brevity. support an opinion with facts."

Everett Brown...Armanti Edwards...Sione Fua...Terell McClain...Dwayne Jarrett...Jeff Otah...Jimmy Clausen...Sherrod Martin...Corvey Irvin...

Facts: These are all 2-3rd round picks taken since 2009 (4 years) that are either out of the league or at the very least no longer with the Panthers. For a franchise like Carolina that wants to build through the draft vs sign high price free agents, this is unacceptable.

charlottean, it was time for Hurney to go. He handicapped this franchise with terrible draft day trades (Brown cost us a 1st round pick and never played; Edwards a 2nd round pick and likewise never played)...unacceptable...

Posted by: Brain | Nov 14, 2013 3:43:31 PM

***correction, Jarrett was 2007 and Otah 2008, both were still busts and 1st/ 2nd round picks***

Posted by: Brain | Nov 14, 2013 3:44:40 PM

today's post by charlottean is almost as long and tiresome as Hurney's tenure in charlotte.

let it go man.

Posted by: big gulps | Nov 14, 2013 3:46:31 PM

I gave Jake Fumbleloom $20,000,000.00 after he threw 5 interceptions.

No need for everybody to be so hateful when comparing Gettleman vs Hurney. The measure of success is wins and the fact is, we simply weren't winning under Hurney's tenure. Does this make him a bad guy? No. It just means he was unable to put together a winning combination of team personnel and coach. Is Gettleman our savior? I don't know. The verdict is still out, but I'm enjoying the current success! I think the players really like and play hard for Rivera. He's still a "young" head coach, but he seems to have learned from early failures. If Gettleman retools our offensive line and finds a true #1 WR either through the draft or FA next year, this is a team that is truly going to be a powerhouse. Stop beating up on each other in these comments and get on board this Panthers bandwagon fellas!!!!

Posted by: ZB | Nov 14, 2013 4:03:59 PM

The constant restructures by Hurney created the mess that Gettleman inherited and prevented us from doing anything in free agency, even a math major like Charlottean should know that.

Posted by: steve | Nov 14, 2013 4:26:24 PM

I drafted a #1 receiver from up in the mountains. Foxy refused to use him.
R-manie will be a star with the browns.

Posted by: Marty Hernia | Nov 14, 2013 4:28:36 PM

brian....

compare that to other teams. and note that mclain, fua, edwards, everette brown (who had a sack the other week), all played nfl games this year or ARE still playing nfl games.

sherrod martin started for 3 years for us.

jeff otah started and was a main cog for a line that produced 2 1200 yard backs. then he was never healthy.

clausen was a complete miss but we got him what? 47th and he was "projected" top 10 after his parents paid kiper. we needed a QB. it was a value pick, but no doubt an absolute miss. that's why he took newton the next year. check the success rate for QB draft picks. there's only 32 jobs and the good ones keep them for 10+ years and there's like 10 drafted every year. you do the math.

irvin and jarrett were absolute misses. but again, do the math.

you are lamented the few failures and completely ignoring the credit deserved for how masterfully he rebuild the franchise from the peppers/jenkins/delhomme/muhammad era to now.

and the 12 over figure included something like 10 million to chris gamble alone. really? come on dude. no way chris gamble was getting 10 million or even a million to play anymore in the state he's in. so you give gettleman all the credit for waiving gamble? really? you think hurney wouldn't?

gettlemen gets the credit for 6 (really 5 for the "counters" and "fans of facts") new starters even though we have no idea what hurney would have done to fill those same 5 spots (we do know he would have taken star 14th).

you say support the team? i am. i supported them last year, the year before, the year before etc. etc. etc. while the bandwagon comes and goes in this fairweather sports town.

i'm the one that saw the same insane defense the latter half of last year. IT WAS THE SAME EFFING LEVEL OF DEFENSE LAST YEAR CHECK THE EFFING TAPE.

but yeah i'm delusional. i'm the one that saw delhomme post one of the best W/L records of all time by an NFL qb and watched you clowns continue to talk negatively about him the past several years because all you can remember is 2009 and one bad playoff game at the end of a great 2008 season. and you all STILL don't understand that the contract extension hurney gave him saved us money on the cap in 2008 and 2009 before the uncapped 2010 season. didn't hurt us at all. without that extension, peppers was gone in 2008 and we don't go 11-5 and make the playoffs.

way too complicated for you kids.

I resign as GM. I suck. I wasn't even a good reporter if i am honest.

Posted by: Marty Hernia | Nov 14, 2013 4:48:36 PM

The Giants picked up Connor for nothing as a free agent. They used him until they "broke" him then returned him to the Panthers.
The Panthers drafted Beason as a number ONE pick and sent him to the Giants for a SEVENTH round pick ... after eating his salary cap hit.
The Giants picked the Panthers pocket twice.

Posted by: criolle | Nov 14, 2013 5:05:08 PM

charlottean please stop.. Yea the defense finished strong last year, but the whole secondary is new, minus cap. We got new strongside linebackers and three new DT's up front. We got ted ginn dirt cheap. Stop fighting over dumb shit go be a browns fan cause you sound like your content with a losing team youngin. Go Panthers get these fake bandwagon fans outta here

Posted by: Mike Win | Nov 14, 2013 5:05:45 PM

charlottean,

for someone who asks others to "check the stats" and "review the tape" you should know the Panthers were 12-4 in 2008, not 11-5.

Posted by: b | Nov 14, 2013 5:38:34 PM

The defense is better this year. We haven't been able to stop the up the middle runs since Jenkins & Buckner left the team. Some fans should save their zealous spirit for our team that needs our support instead of tearing down other fans to make themselves feel better about themselves :)

i feel bad for blog trolls like charlottean.

he has blind loyalty to Hurney and hates the Panthers, so his entire day is dedicated to preaching the gospel of Hurney and clogging up blogs with his rants.
these guys either don't have jobs, are 13 years old, or have jobs and waste their company's money by getting paid to troll instead of work. sad.

Go Panthers!

Posted by: Ted | Nov 14, 2013 10:03:54 PM

where are yall getting that I hate the panthers?

not hardly. i'm not the one that stopped showing up when they were 1-15 and 2-14. I didn't miss a game. get the facts straight. this city is loaded with uninformed bandwagoneers. I am challenging you all to open your eyes, educate yourselves, and make this a better sports city than it is.

B - you're helping my point there. I'm consistently understating points. thanks for reminding me that. 11-5 in 2005 and 2003. 12-4 in 2008. i always welcome and appreciate corrections, in the interest of correctness.

some of you might want to look up what trolling means. clear misunderstanding of that one.

whole new secondary......what does everyone state as the one weakness of this defense? the secondary. godfrey is out for the year, munnerlyn is the only guy that has started every game.

are you guys really that delusional that hurney gets ZERO credit for the entire offense, for the elite punter that we have........and charles johnson, luke kuechly, greg hardy, dwan edwards, captain munnerlyn, etc. ?

are you being serious with yourselves? hurney was the scape goat. look at strength of schedule last year vs. this year. look at the results. 7 of the 9 losses came down to 1 play - 1 coaching gaff. that's not on hurney. 18/25 starters and the 6 haven't been the same guy every game except for ginn and star so you can't really argue that any of the other guys are the HUGE difference makers.

but yeah sure.....johnson, hardy, kuechly, munnerlyn, etc. have nothing to do with this. how silly i am to think that.

Tremendous! It all makes sense now.
