Luke Kuechly named NFC Defensive Player of the Week

And Luke Kuechly makes three.

The Panthers star middle linebacker earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors Tuesday for his stellar performance against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, making him the third Panther to win the award this year after Greg Hardy and Thomas Davis.

Kuechly led the team with 11 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one quarterback hit and one pass defense. He anchored a defense that held San Francisco to 151 total yards of offense, a 15-percent conversion rate on third downs and did not allow a touchdown.

"Our job was to limit the scoring they did as best we could," Kuechly said after the 10-9 Panthers victory Sunday. "Our offense was able to put points on the board to control the clock. We knew at some point we’d have to make a couple of stops and we were able to do that."

Kuechly last won the award in December as he made a late-season push to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Since then, Hardy won the honor in Week 3 after sacking Eli Manning three times. Davis took home the award following his two-sack, nine-tackle performance against Minnesota earlier in the year.

With the award, Kuechly becomes the first Panthers linebacker in the franchise's history to be named Defensive Player of the Week multiple times in his career.*

*- Sam Mills won the award twice, but only once in the regular season. His 1996 NFC Defensive Player of the Week honor came in the NFC Divisional Playoffs. (Thanks to reader Jon for the heads up).

Starting to develop a serious man-crush on the way this guy plays football. LUUUUUUUUUUUKE!

can't believe how many guys hurney passed on to draft this bust.

what a horrible gm.

For every Hurney pick like Kuechly I can give you 10 that were atomic busts. Armanti Edwards leading the way.

Get over it man. Hurney set this franchise back 5 years. Everyone can realize that but you!

and that's the "gospel of Luke" haha

Good grief, lay off Edwards. He has already posted more stats for Cleveland in one game than Hixon has for the Panthers all year. Gettleman had to offer up somebody after the horrible start and it was Edwards and I understand why, to let everyone know that no one is sacred and they could be next. Glad it gave Edwards an opportunity to go somewhere where he might get a chance and it really jump started our season. Anyone with eyes can see the timing of all this and it was a win-win for everyone.

frank - no you can't.

how did he "set the franchise back 5 years" when we're winning this year with almost all players he assembled?

for every armanti edwards you can name, there's a captain munnerlyn, a brad nortman, a byron bell, or a greg hardy that he grabbed in the late rounds.

and that's to go along with all the stud first rounders beason, davis, kalil, newton, kuechly, williams, stewart, etc. the retaining of other stud players such as gross, smith, johnson, godfrey, etc.

bringing in tolbert, bringing in greg olsen.

the team should have been contending LAST YEAR if it weren't for horrible coaching. they ARE contending this year........but I guess that has everything to do with chase blackburn and mike mitchell right? and domenik hixon right?

oh wait, i forgot, of course.......hurney left us in "cap hell" with nearly 20 million in cap room to pass on to next year's payroll.

yeah....he set the franchise back 5 years with all those moves. easily the dumbest fans in the NFL.

If you are hanging your hat on Captain and Byron Bell being your late round gems you have a flawed argument. Hardy is a given, but flaunting Captain and Bell is an extreme reach.

Blackburn, Star, Short, Mitchell, Florence (all of which Gettleman brought in) have transformed this defense from good to great.

right, so johnson, hardy, davis, kuechly, edwards, and munnerlyn have NOTHING to do with it at all.

gettleman's resume flaunting star is like a trust fund baby flaunting his bank account at his 18th birthday party. congrats!

munnerlyn and bell are SOLID starters. are they stars? no of course not, but both are big time football players 7th round and undrafted respectively.

20/25 opening day starters (counting the 3 main special teamers)

18/25 currently. gettlemen gets credit where credit is due but hurney did ALL of the heavy lifting here. this defense was number 10 LAST year and that was without star, and with the offense putting the defense in horrible positions and on the field more.

I love that a message board troll who is delirious enough to think he can make better decisions that NFL management is callng people dumb.

Unlike you I do not have the free time to list page after page of Hurney busts.

I've seen you on here try to gloriy Hurney for drafting Josh Thomas (WRONG) and now you are calling Byron Bell a "late round" pick (WRONG). You are very good at revisionist history kid.

Either you are related to Hurney, not a Panthers fan, or are a fan and were referring to yourself with the "dumbest" comment. 2 out of 3 of these I'm sure...

Posted by: Frank the Tank | Nov 14, 2013 10:17:59 AM

Or even more likely...you are Hurney! I'm sure he has incredible free time these days so it would be fitting.

Posted by: Frank the Tank | Nov 14, 2013 10:19:04 AM

hurney brought in thomas and bell. bell was undrafted, thomas was drafted LATE by the cowboys.

so yeah i was horribly wrong referring to both as late round picks and definitely shouldn't give hurney any credit for bringing guys in that start for us during wins and didn't cost hardly anything to get them.

i'm just stating the facts. 18/25 RIGHT now were hurney guys. blackburn/klein, lotulelei, ginn, florence/white, mitchell, mykell/lester, being the other 6 + gano who came in before gettleman after hurney.

it's just facts. i mean sure.......thomas davis is only having an incredible year for us but hurney doesn't deserve any credit for macguyvering that situation. right?

the busts you refer to are still at a clip far less than the average nfl draft bust. look at other gm's track records. you are expecting perfection and he gave you damn near it and you hate the guy.

4 in 18 4 in 18 4 in 18 4 in 18 4 in 18. how dumb you are.

Posted by: charlottean | Nov 14, 2013 1:58:36 PM

and that's why he's still here right? his "perfection"? you are delirious. know what that word means?

FACT: Hurney is gone and the Panthers are finally good again.

You can either accept that and move on and be happy with a good season so far, or keep trolling msg boards crying about this to people that really don't care. it's nothing but obnoxious at this point.
