Steve Smith: I destroyed Fred Smoot's career

Steve Smith going up against a cornerback is usually a matchup to watch in any Panthers game.

The 13-year wide receiver has had several entanglements over the years, but one in particular stands out.

Smith said today on ESPN’s Mike & Mike radio show that he ruined the career of former Minnesota cornerback Fred Smoot.

“A guy that I take pride in, I destroyed his career, is Fred Smoot,” Smith said after being asked if his trash talk on the field affected an opponent. “He was never the same after.

“After coming in Bank of America Stadium, things just went downhill (for him) from there.”

In 2005 game against the Vikings, Smith hauled in 11 catches for a franchise-high 201 yards and one touchdown while mostly going against Smoot.

"Whatchamacallit was talking to me in the pregame," Smith said about Smoot after the game. "When somebody is banging on your door, I am not going to hide in the corner ... I am going to open it."

That game was, of course, the one in which Smith did the rowboat celebration following his touchdown—a throwback to a infamous boat cruise several members of the Vikings took in an offseason.

“I remember it like it was yesterday,” Smith said.

Fact-checking Smith’s claim of ruining Smoot’s career, he may actually have a point. Before the Vikings played the Panthers in 2005, Smoot had 17 interceptions in four-plus seasons with Washington and Minnesota. After the game against Smith and the Panthers, Smoot had four interceptions in the remaining four-plus seasons of his career.

no doubt about it. i hope he keeps playing to solidify that top 10 all time status with the stats to remove any questions about it. 2 more seasons after this one should do the trick. as crafty as he is, he could probably be a respectable 3rd receiver for another 3 or 4 years the way rice was. i just doubt he does it. but 2 more years at least would be awesome.

Nice research Observer. He was tackled at the 1. It wasn't a touchdown. It probably should have been one though.

Looked up Fred Smoot's bio online. He seemed like a real troublemaker throughout his life on and off the field. He caused alot of problems on the teams he played for and got benched alot for his negative attitude. Guess Smitty just helped put him out of his misery.
