Cam Newton mum on his Heisman vote

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has voted for the eventual Heisman Trophy winner both of the seasons he's had a vote.

But the 2010 Heisman honoree said this year's voting was difficult.

Newton has "personal" connections to two of the finalists -- Florida State quarterback and Heisman favorite Jameis Winston and Auburn running back Tre Mason.

Newton would not reveal his ballot, but seemed to indicate his first-place vote did not go to Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, last year's Heisman winner.

"With me knowing Jameis and me knowing Tre, it's going to kind of be hard to be talking to Johnny Football," Newton said Wednesday. "It was a pretty hard pick."

Newton, who led Auburn to the 2010 national title, called Winston "a great guy," but did not say how he knew him. Predictably, Newton raved about Mason's record-setting performance in the SEC title game when he ran for 304 yards and four touchdowns on 46 carries in the victory over Missouri.

"What he just did was ridiculous in the SEC championship game," Newton said. "So War Eagle to that."

Winston had a great year - but after reading everything about his "concentual" assualt I think Mason has to be the winner. Winston might seem like a nice guy but at a minimum he has no issue taking advantage of a woman in a drunken state and then sharing her with his roommate. This occured more than once - according to statements under oath by his roommate. Imagine your daughter being put in that situation - sorry but Winston doesn't deserve to be playing much less getting an award like the Heisman.

manziel is probably the most deserving but there's no way they give it to him. too much hype last year - he backed it up with a great year but without the hype there's no accolades.

If i'm jacksonville, or cleveland, or houston i'm spending a 2nd rounder on him.
