Steve Smith has sprained knee ligament

Panthers receiver Steve Smith has a sprained posterior cruciate ligament and will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis, coach Ron Rivera said Monday.

Smith is "highly doubtful" to play Week 17 at Atlanta, but Rivera said the news could have been worse.

"It was very good news considering the alternative," Rivera said. "Where he sprained it and how lack of severity there was, that was all positive news. It really was. And I’m excited and very happy with Steve."

Smith was injured while planting to jump for a Cam Newton pass in the first quarter Sunday against the Saints. He returned for one play in the second quarter before limping off the field.

Smith was at Bank of America Stadium receiving treatment Monday after undergoing an MRI exam.

"He said well it doesn’t feel very good right now, coach," Rivera said. "We do know Steve. Steve’s tenacious and he’ll do everything he can. He’s going to work very, very hard."

In the meantime, Ted Ginn Jr. will slide up the depth chart, alongside receiver Brandon LaFell. Domenik Hixon, who caught the game-winning touchdown pass against the Saints, will also be in the rotation and could end up starting.

Really want to see the other guys get the chance. Steve comes up big and plays hard but maybe his replacement is on THIS roster.

Can we see some more 3 wide-out looks?

Smitty deserves the playoffs. I so hope we lock up the #2 spot and he comes back for a playoff run.

Hixon has BIG game experience we need to utilize his abilities, He gives Cam a larger target to throw to, Look guys he and Olsen have that playoff experience this guy should be in the mix heavily he comes up with clutch catches that Lafell drops which makes me question why Shula hasnt give Hixon more opportunities. This thing about your the starter until you get hurt needs to stop look at other teams like the patriots Bradys throwing to new receivers all the time this is how you find a duamond in the wrough. R

Hixon is proven, He was a favorite target of Mannings in NY seems to me you shouldnt get concerned on getting Lafell a contract for next season by giving him all the reps but. binstead be concened about starting receivers that give the team the best chance at winning.
