Former 49ers long snapper says Cam Newton owes him $25,000

Former 49ers long snapper Brian Jennings said on San Francisco radio Wednesday that Panthers quarterback Cam Newton owes him $25,000.

“Cam Newton owes me $25,000,” Jennings said on KNBR. “Not a lot of people know that.”

Why $25,000? That’s the difference between the winning and losing teams in the 2012 Pro Bowl.

Newton was selected for the Pro Bowl after his 2011 rookie season. Jennings, who played for the 49ers from 2000-2012 and is no longer in the league, was also picked for his second Pro Bowl that season.

The NFC lost the game 59-41 to the AFC. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers started the game and New Orleans’ Drew Brees played in the second quarter. Newton played the entire second half.

“We have Drew Brees with his playbook all week, studying,” Jennings said. “We have Cam Newton with his head phones on all week goofing off. … We go into the game, and this guy is chucking the ball all over the place, and everybody is looking around going, ‘What’s this guy doing? Is he kidding?’ The punter and I look at each other and say, ‘We are going to have a long second half.’ We punted five times in the Pro Bowl.”

Newton went 9-for-27 for 186 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He also rushed four times for 14 yards as the NFC put up 13 points in the second half.

“He went in there and stank it up," Jennings said, who had a laughing tone throughout. "He never looked at his playbook and he’s chucking the ball all over the place. Can’t hit the open guy.”

This isn’t the first Newton-at-the-Pro-Bowl story that’s come to light in the years since. CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco wrote in 2012 that there “was no denying that the AFC players went hard” after Newton in the game.

Jennings went on to proclaim Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula a "genius!" for turning Newton, whom he first jokingly referred to as Vince Young, into a "functional game manager."

It should be noted that Brian Jennings (former 9er) is an extremely funny / sarcastic guy. He had the radio guys cracking up throughout the interview.

The 49ers are doing a lot of talking to be coming to OUR house on Sunday! Can't wait to hear what they have to say Sunday after the game! The Panthers and Cam continue to prove the critics wrong and will continue to do so on Sunday! Let's see how many sacks our D gets on Kap...we "owe" him a few more this time! Go Panthers!!

"Jennings, who played for the 49ers from 2000-2012 and is no longer in the league"

That says it all.

that he played for 12 years?

There is nothing worse than when a punter or kicker talk smack --- unless its the long snapper. maybe he should come whip Cams butt for it.

Ha, I'm sure this joker did plenty of studying and extra work while there!, considering they all received the same pay, and he had to do jack squat, other than snap the ball 5 times! just be happy you got paid at all, loser!

OK, give him his money. Since it was the pro bowl, monopoly money should suffice.

It was all a big joke - I heard it live. You guys are looking for something to get fired up about when your team just needs to play the Game. Panthers are a very good team - they get much respect here in SF, but they Players will make it happen - one way or another. Good luck Panthers, Go Niners!

Sounds like someone is butt hurt about losing the pro bowl... That's got to be a first.

Who gives a crap about Cam Newton pro bowl performance
I thought people were saying that the pro bowl stupid

Cam Newton was so bad that he had the NFL considering canceling the Pro Bowl for good. I like Cam but I'm sorry it's the truth about how we can't throw, read defenses and etc. sorry but the truth hurts.

Sounds typical of a player like Newton. He's a big cry baby and we'll see it on Sunday after the Niner kick his ass in Charolette..

Drew and Aaron were seasoned veterans. Cam was like 21 or 22 at the time. How many people lacked maturity at that age? C'mon man!?!

Posted by: Ripp | Jan 9, 2014 9:18:28 PM

It was a joke! I personally know Brian and I promise everyone that he is completely kidding about the $!!! That being said many players we're questioning Mr Newtons work ethic during his stay in Honolulu.

Yeah ppl trippin. If I was 22in the Pro Bowl I'd be goofin off too! Can u imagine that feeling?? At that age?? Get off his junk.. an whoever said Cam can't throw doesn't watch football. And especially not the 2nd half of the year (60% of his passes completed). But.. we still gon win!

Posted by: quez | Jan 10, 2014 9:25:12 AM

So Jennings, what are you going to say when Cam and the Panthers whip the 49ers butts on Sunday? I think Cam has come a long way from last year and we are here to stay. No matter who will be missing on Sunday, put your Congrats in order. GO PANTHERS.

The pro bowl is stupid why would you even try and risk getting hurt for a game that doesn't even count

Posted by: Philly_y | Jan 10, 2014 10:34:03 AM

The Pro Bowl is an Exhibition game, where players are going half speed and it is mainly about big plays and high scores because that is what fans want to see. I doubt that the playbook was that complex that it needed to be studied. The last person that should criticize Cam about playing the QB position is a long snapper. Also, players are not contractually obligated to pay other players for the outcome of a game, it is a team game; so if Jennings is upset about losing the Pro Bowl he needs to talk to the league.

This story is so dumb and is irrelevant to this postseason. The panthers are playing amazing due to his leadership and not to mention his overall skill. This is just another stupid reason to hype up players. The panthers will dominate this game and shut down the niners offense. #gopanthers!

Posted by: rick | Jan 10, 2014 1:09:26 PM

Everyone picking the miners...really ???..they haven't see the panthers dfence at home ..memba kap got 6 sacks the first time we played them ..that button compare to Greg hardy at home whom I must say did not touch him the first game...the world gonna see this blue light on Sunday ..map better run for ur life ...cause ur line is no match to panthers dline...

Posted by: papashell | Jan 10, 2014 4:14:19 PM

It is amazing that Jennings states that Cam owes him money funny how no now was blocking for him! After watching that shambles that you call a game I have not watched a pro bowl nor do I intend to watch one! roger Goodall is right in making a case against playing pro bowls a big waste of time Jennings I bet you not been back to Hawaii since.

Crabtree, Patton and Ray macdonald (3 starters) completely missed week 10. Vernon, Reid, Aldon and whitner all missed large portions of that game. That's 7 starters missing. 49ers r now healthy and clicking at the right time. Steve smith and Stewart both non threats due to injury. Good luck scoring points vs 9ers d. A week off, lil rust and injuries will play a role. I think ric flair has it right. Go niners !!!! Whoooooooooooo!
