Rivera expresses concerns for Smith's knee

Panthers coach Ron Rivera echoed wide receiver Steve Smith's latest update on his sprained left knee after Thursday's practice.

"Fifty-seven percent, that's what (Smith) told me," Rivera said, laughing.

But Rivera turned more serious as he continued to discuss the status of Smith, who showed up to Bank of America Stadium "a little sore" Thursday morning after his first practice in more than two weeks, according to Rivera.

Smith was still limited during Thursday's practice, although Rivera said Smith received more reps than Wednesday.

"He looked good. He moved around pretty well. But he's not his normal self yet," Rivera said. "But he was out there. He did things he was supposed to do. We'll see how he feels tomorrow in the morning. He came in, he felt pretty good, a little sore. We'll see how he is tomorrow."

Rivera elaborated on what he meant in saying Smith was not his "normal self."

"When you watch Steve and watch the way he does things, there's a smoothness to his movements. And it's not quite there yet," Rivera said. "It'll be work and it's just a matter of time."

The Panthers will have one more practice -- a light session Friday -- before facing the 49ers in the divisional round.

Smith and defensive tackle Colin Cole (calf) were the only players listed as limited Thursday.

I'd say don't push it. Another week won't hurt & it'll give the team a chance to see what else or whoelse they can depend on @ the WR spot to determine how o draft or who to go after in free agency..

Another week won't hurt? This is do-or-die time. Loser is done for the season. If Smitty CAN play, you better believe he will be on the field. Even at 57% Smitty is better than ANY of the WR corps we have right now. Just look at how dramatically the offense dropped off right after Smitty left with the injury after the New Orleans game. We won by the skin of our teeth. Not going to happen against San Francisco if Smitty is a no go.

They are trolling the media and 49ers hard. Agent 89 will be out on the field Sunday and close to 100%.

No need to panic folks...Smith will play, even on one leg if he has to!

CAMS ACCURACY AND QUICK READS ARE KEY TO KEEPING DRIVES ALIVE,SHULA MUST TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WHAT THE 49ERS GIVE HIM...THERE SHOULD ALWAYS BE AN UNDERNEATH RECEIVER OR BACK FOR CAM TO DROP OFF TO ,WE HAVE TO KEEP MOVING THE CHAINS,RUNNING GAME WOULD ALSO BE NICE TO HAVE SO WE CAN MIX IT UP...IF WE COULD GET A OFF TACKLE PLAY WITH A LEAD BLOCKING DEFENSIVE LINEMAN IN THE BACKFIELD WITH A (BAM) BLOCK CLEARING THE HOLE AND STEWART HITTING THE HOLE QUICK WITH SPEED IT WOULD BE GLORIOUS TO SEE HIM TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE WITH 4.3 SPEED

RIVERA REMEMBER WILLIAM (REFRIGERATOR) PERRY AS IN (BAM) BLOCK OR CLEARING THE WAY...MAYBE OUR VERSION COULD BE STAR L. OR HARDY ...JUST SAY`IN ...

Again, we virtually stand no chance without Smith nearly 100% and able to play the entire game.

Well, it's gonna be a show down come Sunday. Steve Smith is my favorite WR, would love to see him play Sunday. We can't depend on one WR, there's a team out there. I know we can handle the 49ers without him As I said before we are Super Bowl bound. I keep telling those guys to use the old days remedies, red alcohol, epsom salt baths, forget those modern remedies, that's just money to be made for the doctors. All those steroid shots, they don't work for long, take it from old folks, lol. I am ready to buy my Super Bowl gear that says Carolina Panthers. GO PANTHERS
