Combine profile: Oklahoma State CB Justin Gilbert
Name: Justin Gilbert
School/Class: Oklahoma State/Senior
Projected round: 1st
Career highlights: An all-conference cornerback and return specialist, Gilbert was edged by Darqueze Dennard as the top cornerback in this year’s draft. He had six interceptions this past season and had a total of six kickoffs returned for touchdowns in his career.
Did you know?: He intercepted passes from Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Ryan Tannehill during his collegiate career. When asked who his favorite cornerbacks are, Gilbert said Joe Haden, Richard Sherman and Patrick Peterson but didn’t know who Patriots CB Aqib Talib is.
Quotes: “I think I'm a dangerous return man with the ball in my hands and on an interception there is always a possibility for me to take it back to house.
“I was a terrible backpedaller, especially when I first got there because I was a quarterback in high school. So defensive back was new to me. Being a good backpedaller and fluid with my hips was a big key.”
Panthers’ level of interest: He’s be the answer to some of the Panthers’ secondary woes if only Carolina picked higher and didn’t have other, more pressing needs. Gilbert could be an elite cornerback in the NFL, but he won’t have his rookie season in Carolina. He should be one of the first two corners off the board.
