Combine profile: Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel

Name: Johnny Manziel

Position: Quarterback

Height/weight: 6-0/207

School/class: Texas A&M/Redshirt sophomore

Projected round: 1st

Career highlights: The most electrifying player in college football the past two seasons, Manziel won the Heisman Trophy in 2012 after breaking nearly every SEC record Cam Newton had set.

Also, this:

Did you know?: Manziel’s great-great grandfather was a bantamweight boxer from Lebanon and sparred with heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey, according to this fascinating profile of the Manziel family.

Quotes: “I believe whenever I decided to make this decision to turn professional, it was a time to put my college years in the past. This is a job. There’s guys’ families, coaches’ families and jobs and all kinds of things on the line. For me, it won’t be a hard thing to kick. I’m extremely focused on whatever organization I’m at.”

“People make me out to be a big, Hollywood guy. I’m still a small-town kid. Sometimes you get caught up in certain things, but at the same time I’m continuing to learn and adapt to everything going on in my life. So I’m not saying it’s always easy, but continuing to be who I’ve always been is a big thing for me.”

“I’m able to handle (the off-field scrutiny) and able to adapt to it. It’s not something that gets to me all that much. Now that I’m in San Diego (training), I’m really trying to hone in and focus on what I need to be doing to get ready for the combine and pro day.”

Panthers’ level of interest: Zero. Manziel will be a starting quarterback immediately, and he won’t fall out of the top 10. If there are reports of the Panthers meeting with Manziel at the combine, it’s to find out more about his draft-eligible teammates.
