Combine profile: Florida State WR Kelvin Benjamin
Name: Kelvin Benjamin
Position: Wide receiver
School/Class: Florida State/Redshirt sophomore
Projected round: 1st
Career highlights: Voted by the ACC coaches as an All-ACC second-team receiver, Benjamin led the league in touchdowns with 15 and hauled in 1,011 receiving yards for the Seminoles. He averaged a touchdown every 3.6 catches. He had four catches for 56 yards against Auburn in the national championship, including the game-winning touchdown with 13 seconds left.
Did you know?: Benjamin helped his Glades Central (Fla.) High team to the state title game but couldn’t play due to Florida’s high school athletic association’s rules. The association doesn’t allow players over the age of 19 years, 9 months to compete athletically, so he missed the final two games of his senior season. More on Benjamin’s age below.
Quotes: “I’m trying to be physical, dominate at the highest point, blocking. But I can learn a lot from a lot of these guys. I try to play small and let my size take care of the rest.
“You watch a lot of receivers. You watch Larry Fitzgerald because he’s a technician and a route runner. You watch Calvin (Johnson), and he goes and gets the ball at the highest point. And then you watch the smaller guys and try to imitate their quickness off the line.”
Panthers’ level of interest: A lot of people have Benjamin mocked to Carolina, and Panthers fans are excited for multiple reasons, including the fact that he was a star receiver for the national champions. Benjamin could certainly be the answer to Carolina’s receiving corps—the complement to Steve Smith and eventually the successor. But Gettleman made it clear it’s tough to find a No. 1 receiver in the draft, and it’s dicey to use a first-round pick with that hope in mind on someone who played two years of college football. Benjamin is an old redshirt sophomore at 23, and that’s because he repeated the third and seventh grades and was kept out of school another time for a “legal issue,” according to the Palm Beach Post. Carolina will certainly investigate Benjamin’s past in the coming months if he’s truly a target for the Panthers.
