Panthers re-sign LB Williams, CB Dockery

Free agency in Carolina continues to creep along, but the Panthers did re-sign two free agents on Monday.

Cornerback James Dockery, who battled a shoulder injury most of 2013, and linebacker Jason Williams will be back with the team in 2014.

Dockery tweeted last week he would be re-joining the team after being the final restricted free agent the team had. He stood out at the end of the 2012 season when the team turned to its bench in the closing weeks to get playing time for the younger part of its roster.

Williams has been and likely will continue to be used primarily on the special teams unit. Williams blocked a punt against the Jets late in the 2013 season for his biggest play as a member of the Panthers.

With linebacker Jordan Senn signing with the Bears last week, the Panthers will likely turn to Williams, who was an unrestricted free agent, to be one of the leaders on the special teams unit.

I want to hear something about some WR. Sidney Rice, Jones, give us something.

Kenny Britt

Have either of them ever played WR?

Posted by: Mike W | Mar 17, 2014 3:14:09 PM

Did you all not hear? Gettlebum has decided that there is no need for WR. He is just going to have Newton run every down.

Posted by: Eric K | Mar 17, 2014 3:18:19 PM

Jesus people chill out. Still have time and the draft to address the WR issue further.

I just farted

No wide receivers in the league want to play with a run-first egomaniac that overthrows WR's when he actually passes....

Posted by: tony clifton | Mar 17, 2014 3:33:36 PM

I heard Gettleman put a towel over his head Cam-style when he let our WR's test free agency and they all bailed to better teams.

I'd like to hear LaFell compare and contrast the Patriots org to the Panthers org. Would be unreal I bet.

Riiiiight Tony, you keep telling yourself thats the reason if it makes you feel better

Welcome to the Legion of Whom Dockery.

This just in, Panthers not going after any wide receivers because they will be running the wishbone with all their running backs.

T,

You honestly think Smith and LaFell's reception numbers will drop off this year???

Keep sipp'n the cam-ade.

Posted by: tony clifton | Mar 17, 2014 3:39:47 PM

Cam will be throwing TDs to himself. Olsen will catch a few I suppose.

DeSean Jackson, Crotchery, Jones - I don't care. Just sign a couple of Recievers!!

Posted by: Panther's fan | Mar 17, 2014 3:53:41 PM

i'm lost......dockery is the "last restricted free agent"......

what is the status of byron bell? it keeps being talked about as if its done. nothing on his twitter, nothing on the teams, nothing on espn. what am i missing here?

he signs elsewhere and we have BOTH tackle spots to fill + 4 WRs + some secondary and special teams needs. + a guard spot unless we're rolling with nate chandler.

Seriously Eric? "Gettlebum?" Can everybody just give the man a chance to finish whatever he is doing with the team this offseason before passing judgement? Did he not do a HECK of a job last year with limited cap? Getting sick and tired of all of these doom and gloomers. Let's get through free agency and the draft and then unload on the man if you like. Geeze!

As much as I'm going to miss smitty, from a business standpoint it was the best thing to release him. Because the way Hurney backloaded his contract his cap hit would have been worse next year. We have big contracts to worry about with cam, Luke ect. And let's face Steve isn't getting younger so his is going to decline as the price goes up. The Gman is very calculated in his decisions and is building a young team for long term success. As as smith fan, I love smith and will be sure to follow his career. As a carolina fan I am all in and think the Gman may be brilliant. If he could pull off a kraken trade he could sure up the OL and get a receiver in the first. We could also get a extra mid round pics this year or next. I'm excited to see how this plays out. I would also like a cheap Rice deal.

That's what im saying Seriously? - I will bash Gettleman just as much as the next guy but I will do it after the season starts if we are not performing. Give the guy a chance.

Posted by: Exactly | Mar 17, 2014 4:06:29 PM

I love how Gettleman goes from "genius who put together playoff roster from ashes that Hurney left" to "idiot Gettlebum that wasn't prepared for free agency"....

Jeez people, you think they really don't have a clue??? Give it a rest, the sky is not falling just because we let go of and aging, below-average statistical receiver and didn't sign Hakeem Nicks (who hasn't been good since 2011)....

Posted by: Craig | Mar 17, 2014 4:10:20 PM

25 starters last year (including the 3 main special teams guys).

18 were hurney guys, 6 were gettleman, 1 was neither (gano).

of the 6 gettleman brought in, 2 remain.

craig you're talking about stats. thats whats wrong with the argument against smith. everybody assumes he's deteriorating because he posted mediocre stats last year. he did that a few years prior, too. and came back with a monster stat year. it's not like he wasn't getting open, and it's not like he was dropping everything. run the tape back, cam is no peyton manning when it comes to accuracy.

you are giving the guy entirely too much credit for the KR, Safety, Corner he brought in. davis and keuchly and munnerlyn and hardy and johnson did most of the damage. lotulelei too and anybody would have drafted him in our slot after he fell from projected #1.

people are freaking out with reason. the SOLID free agents have already been picked over for a week. it's not like we have 6 picks in the first 3 rounds. you cannot reasonably expect for all these holes to get filled competently in the draft in a way where we can contend next year. we were 12-4 last year with a young core. we should be in win-now mode contending for a title and this dude decided it would be a great year for a semi-rebuild. and he's lying about the cap numbers to make himself look better. godfrey isn't making 7 million this year coming off of ACL tear. and we wouldn't have so much dead weight if he wasn't paying guys to go play for the opponents.

and somehow sold all of you guys that jon beason can't play outside linebacker even though he played OLB in college and was a PRO BOWL OLB in 2010. right....we got a 7th round pick for him. awesome.

Posted by: charlottean | Mar 17, 2014 4:20:49 PM

breaking news: Jon Stewart has turf toe and won't play until Nov of 2014.

Posted by: tony clifton | Mar 17, 2014 4:23:53 PM

Great defense. Gman drafted two excellent defensive tackles last year. Our recievers were not good last year. Build through the draft. You naysayers haven't a clue.
