Panthers sign QB Joe Webb

Joe Webb has started in as many playoff games as Cam Newton, but don't expect the former Vikings quarterback to usurp Newton's starting job.

The Panthers signed Webb, 27, to a one-year deal on Friday, and Webb becomes the fourth quarterback—and third healthy one—on the team’s roster.

"Joe had a strong workout for us today. He is a young player who intrigues us and has a similar skill set to Cam (Newton)," Panthers coach Ron Rivera said in a statement. "With Cam sidelined for the spring, it is an opportunity to get a good evaluation of Joe as well as Matt Blanchard, who was on our practice squad last year."

The Panthers’ top two quarterback positions are set with Newton and Derek Anderson, a former Pro Bowler who re-signed with the Panthers last week for a two-year deal. Webb will compete with Blanchard for the No. 3 spot, as well as serve as the third quarterback for the team during spring workouts while Newton is sidelined recovering from ankle surgery.

Webb, who was an unrestricted free agent, played the past four seasons in Minnesota. Webb has 853 career passing yards with three touchdowns and five interceptions. The Vikings selected Webb in the sixth round of the 2010 draft out of Arkansas-Birmingham.

Webb also plays receiver, and last year he caught five passes for 33 yards for the Vikings. But in a press release, the team made it clear it is bringing in Webb to be a quarterback.

Webb is best known for being the emergency starting quarterback in a wild-card game against Green Bay in the 2013 playoffs. Christian Ponder couldn't play due to injury, and Webb went 11-for-30 for 180 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the 24-10 loss to the Packers.

Webb. What a waste of a roster spot.

he will be cut by preseason. he will only be around in OTA to replicate cams speed on roll outs bootlegs and sprint outs. He has shown he is not a viable NFL player….

Gettleman stays by his plan which is good solid veterans with game time experience. I hope we have a wide open contest for WR. I like speed. We should look at Jacoby Ford, Alexander and Miles Austin after the draft. Go OL first round and WR round 2 and 3.

Gettleman you got my vote keep up the good work.

this year is proving ground for dude.....last year he only had 6/25 starters (including 3 special teamers).

this year he'll have more thanks to his decisions this offseason. it's A LOT of turnover for a 12-4 team. if it works, dude is going to look brilliant. in the more likely scenario that it doesn't, he's going to look idiotic.

you guys are giving a ton of faith to a guy that hasn't done much yet.

i would feel better if the press release didn't mention anything about qb vs. wr. better to have a 5th wr, 3rd qb kind of guy than tell a guy when you sign him that we don't need him to do that.

Dear The Kraken @12:27:22 AM - if you're going to bust somebody out and call them "idiotic,".....learn how to type, and spell!

So....you're not a Charlottean? Typical New Yorker takes name "The Kraken" and then tries to bust on Charlotte. Toolshed.

i'm still amazed that some of you are so dumb you can't understand the name BELOW the comment is the one making the comment.

nobody anywhere said anything about charlotte. but then the kids that can't read good started talking about new york. because that's smart. same person probably doesn't actually live in charlotte either.

as for deepenwide: i'm a bobcats fan. rod higgins showed me exactly what idiotic looks like year after year after year. so do the insanely uninformed fans of the panthers who somehow think we have a horrible franchise.
