Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit

The Panthers' front office hasn't spent all of its energies on Steve Smith this week.

A league source said the Panthers hosted free agent safety Roman Harper on a visit Wednesday. Harper, a two-time Pro Bowler cut by New Orleans in a salary cap move, left without a contract but is expected to remain in talks with the Panthers, the source said.

Harper, 31, played in only nine games, with five starts, last season. He's the type of undervalued player Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman signed last year and said he was looking for again this offseason.

Harper would give the Panthers an experienced safety to replace Mike Mitchell, who signed with Pittsburgh this week, and possibly Charles Godfrey, who is coming off Achilles surgery and is a potential salary-cap casualty himself.

Harper, the Saints' second-round pick in 2006, was due to make more than $3 million in salary and bonuses this year for a Saints team that was tight against the cap.

The Panthers like to use their safeties to blitz, something Harper does well. His 17 sacks since 2006 are the most by any defensive back during that span. He also has 14 forced fumbles.

Harper missed seven games last season with a knee injury before returning in Week 10. He had five tackles in the Saints' playoff loss to Seattle.

Seriously Harper ? Steve Smith hated this guy, hell I hated this guy ever since late cheap shot in the endzone after Smitty burned him. You cut steve and you bring in his enemies?

Release the Kraken!!!

not crazy about Harper, but Smith has made enemies with half of the safeties and corners in the league. At least he won't be there to punch him in the face.

This guy is one of the biggest punks in the NFL. If they cut Smitty and sign this asshole, I'm going to have a hard time rooting for the Panthers in 2014.

Panthers gm is an idiot!!!
At least offer Smith a one year reduction in
salary and let him retire after a year.

This guy would be a great addition, but I hate his guts.

Gettleman wants to mold the team inn his image, so he has to bring in a lot of no class guys.

Cheap shot artist! this guy is an A1 A$$hole. Is this the kind of player I can root for? No!

Funny... all the BS you say about Harper I think about that ahole Smith. Panthers fans wouldn't know a real football player if he came up and hit their dbag receiver in the endzone. You would be lucky to have a baller like Harper. Whodat!

HomesickNola,

I bet you are a big fan of Darren Sharper too.

Posted by: B-Man | Mar 13, 2014 9:43:03 AM

Just hope he does not stay in the NFC South
Or the NFC.
If he does we will lose the close one because of him
He is one player you dont give fuel to excell

Would love to see him become a patriot though.
I think with the time left before he retire
A quarter back like Tom Brady would give him
A great sense of Redemption because
I know that they will utilize him in every way possible
And reward him for his hard work with Pro Bowls
And Record catching remaining years
God Bless
You
Mr Smith
Thank you for your time
With the Panthers and giving us so many fun times
Watching you desimate teams

Darren Sharper the football player? Yes... he gave us a ring, it's a great feeling... you'll have to just trust me on that one. Sharper the man? No not a fan of his actions. But I can differentiate a man from his work.

So, 89 is a "distraction" and could be "poisonous" to the locker room yet they're looking at someone that was squarely in the middle of the cheap shot era of the Saints? I'm really starting to turn on this FO. Moves are making me sick.

Guys,

All trash talk aside, he's a great player. Don't get wrapped up in your emotions. The point of my first point (though taken seriously when intended to be tongue in cheek) was that every teams hero is rival teams D-bag. They play football, with passion. All of them do and you can't tell if they are good guys or bad guys by what you know of them. Enjoy watching them play with passion. I wish Roman and Steve all the best wherever they end up.

Whodat!

Steve Smith is a "sucker-punch" artist.

Posted by: Jerry Richardson | Mar 13, 2014 10:00:55 AM

No,, HomeSickNola, God gave you a fluke Super Bowl after he destroyed your POS city. Y'all will never win another one.

Posted by: tony clifton | Mar 13, 2014 11:20:08 AM

Jerry Richardson at least we got a Superbowl you dumbshit and u can Gfy

Posted by: wolfema | Mar 13, 2014 11:24:37 AM

Steve Smith a distraction? At least not a dirty player. Would take 20 fiery Steve's over 1/2 of Harper.

Posted by: dbear | Mar 13, 2014 11:57:15 AM

I was never very good at math... but what's the number that's lower than 1? oh yeah! The number of Superbowls the panthers have.

Serious. Love how you guys are too 'tarded to understand my point. Come on down to Nola one day and we'll discuss over real BBQ.

HomesickNola,

How many Super Bowl appearances did the Saints have in their first 17 years? What about their first 40 years?

That would be zero. Your team sucked for 45 years!

Posted by: B-Man | Mar 13, 2014 12:45:21 PM

Everyone hates Harper until his first major defensive stop or interception.

If Gettleman thinks he should be on this team and gets him at a discount, then it's a good move.

Posted by: Brandon | Mar 13, 2014 12:47:31 PM

Well said Brandon. I lift my glass to you.

Posted by: HomesickNola | Mar 13, 2014 1:26:22 PM

Many of us hated Mike Mitchell for his late hit on Cam until he came here and did well last year. Yes it is easy to hate Harper, like Brandon said though, his first INT we will all be cheering for him.

It sucks Smith is gone but he handled it a lot better than I would have thought. This is also a business, and we as fans also have to move on.

The real blame here lays with Hurney for his moronic draft picks and stupid contracts that have hamstrung this team for years. Otherwise Smith might have had a different, more productive role and also we might not be shopping for mid-level vets at positions of need. Gettleman can only do so much with the cap space he has right now.
