Panthers sign Roman Harper
The Panthers have found their replacement for free safety Mike Mitchell, signing former Saints safety Roman Harper to a two-year deal Saturday, according to a league source.
Harper, 31, visited the Panthers this week and the two sides continued negotiating after the trip. The deal is for $4.5 million, with a $1.5 million bonus, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Harper, 31, is a two-time Pro Bowler who was the heart of the Saints' defense for a number of years. But he missed seven games last season with a knee injury before returning in Week 10.
He ended up with only five starts, but played well in New Orleans' playoff loss at Seattle.
Harper's signing likely will impact what the Panthers decide to do with free safety Charles Godfrey, who is coming off Achilles surgery and carries a $7.1 million cap figure.
Harper was involved in the Saints' so-called Bountygate scandal two years ago after Yahoo! Sports reported Harper received $200 for a big hit during the Saints' playoff win against Detroit in January 2012.
But Harper was not disciplined for his role in the bounty program.
It's probably just as well Harper didn't bump into former Panthers wideout Steve Smith during Harper's visit this week.
Harper drew a personal foul penalty after drilling Smith after the whistle following Smith's touchdown catch against the Saints during a 2011 game.

Good pickup who fills a necessary need with Mike Mitchell gone.

Not a bad pick up. Solid in the run defense, but not the best in pass coverage.

Also, should we go ahead and discuss the likelihood than he and Smith will get into it again when we play Baltimore?

Wow...ROFL. IDK what to say. Spending that Hakim Nicks money quick I guess. I will never respect Roman Harper after how he treated our Panthers players (Steve Smith)

They better not cut Godfrey....just try to restructure him. Because if he comes back from that injury strong, then our safety position would be decent with him and Harper, with Lester backing up. But we can't continue to release players at thin positions, just to have to fill that position again later on like we're doing at WR. Not to mention paying them to play elsewhere. Leave it alone Gettleman and go get James Jones and bring back Lafell.

This is just another slap in the face of Steve Smith I guess. Fuck that ignorant General Manager of the Panthers. I hate Roman Harper.

And now Harper has more catches in the NFL then any WR we have

(Old)Smitty Ginn Hixon Lafell. Dime a dozen. Campbell Byers Hangartner Michell Munnerlyn. Nickel a dozen. Gross retirement was imminent.

If you think singing Harper was a slap in the face to Smitty, wait til Harper gets a hold of him in Baltimore.

Need to get Dominique Rogers cromartie

haha @ jason. perfect. we should have resigned munnerlyn to play the nickel and slot receiver and punt returner positions troy brown style.
harper's a dirty player. going to be hard to pull for the guy.
and just so we're clear....he turns 32 next season. and has way more grey hair than any other 31 year old i've ever met. smith turns 35 in may. so we pay the 35 year old to go away to sign the 32 year old with the balance? instead of just keeping the 35 year old and signing a younger safety? this guy treated steve smith like he was terrell owens or chad johnson or some ish.
i'm waiting to see how the byron bell and charles godfrey situations play out.

As someone said in another forum, people keep pointing out how Harper had a cheap shot on Smitty....what about the cheap shot Mitchell (as a Raider) had on Cam? Harper is going to do just fine and brings in another guy wtih intensity for our D. I wouldn't want Gettelman's job right now. He is working with a money starved salary cap left behind by his predecessor. He has reiterated numerous times that its going to take a couple years to get out of this mess. As for receivers, it looks like he will be going after young talent in the draft. I also read some where that they are developing another young Tight end who can not only block, but can catch and run as well (unlike Hartsock who they let go) If thats true, then its a good possibility of a two tight end set--kind of like the year they had Shockey and Olsen.

Harper, welcome to Charlotte you POS cheap shot artist.
I think Gettleman is trying to screw us the fans.

Solid pickup for cheap.
What's up with all these parody "sky is falling" posts from rival fans? these cant be real panther fans, right? I would expect folks who take the time to write a comment to also have a clue about how the cap works and why we are pretty much handcuffed for the next 2 years.

What! Roman Harper??? The same guy who took a cheap shot at Steve Smith. This is like a bad movie that won't end.
