Cam Newton to play first half vs. Patriots

Panthers coach Ron Rivera plans to play Cam Newton and the rest of his starters for the first half of Friday's exhibition at New England.

Newton played five series in Sunday's win against Kansas City in his first action since March surgery to tighten the ligaments in his left ankle. Newton led the Panthers to touchdowns on his final two series before giving way to backup Derek Anderson late in the second quarter.

Rivera said the hope is to keep Newton in for the entire first half against the Patriots, as long as there are no setbacks with the ankle.

"They're still going to get some good reps, some quality reps," Rivera said Wednesday. "I hope we can get a two-minute drill at the end of the first half with that bunch, as well."

The Panthers could be without the starting right side of their offensive line at New England. Right tackle Nate Chandler is out with swelling in his knee, while guard Trai Turner has missed the past two days of practice with a groin injury.

Rivera said Turner would be re-evaluated Friday.

Veteran Garry Williams will replace Chandler. Chris Scott, who started eight games at right guard last year, would step in for Turner, the rookie from LSU.

Other injury notes:

--Rookie free safety Tre Boston returned to practice, but worked mostly on the side. Boston had missed all but one of the previous preseason practices after aggravating a sports hernia.

--Outside linebacker Chase Blackburn remains sidelined with a back injury, but Rivera said surgery has not been discussed.

--Starting cornerback Melvin White was held out after his back stiffened up Wednesday morning.

--Backup offensive lineman Andrew McDonald left the two-hour practice early with apparent heat-related symptoms.

This being the same team that one of the players leg whipped CJ. Think Bellichek won't go after Cam. Look how hard they were coming after Cam against Cheifs. Idk I'm nervous I know he's gotta play but I'm gonna be nervous.

Come out before the game and get your free Cammy Cam juice samples. Keep pounding!

Brandon Bersin should be starting with the 1st team' If he gets cut I guarantee G-bay or Denver or any other pass happy team will scarf him up and he will start. Our running game as usual looks vannila, seems our offensive run plays are terribly drawn up please compare with NE running plays and see the aggressive difference. Our 1st team O AND D got it handed to them , not even close....

If Gronk would of played it would of been a massacre. We should of at least played a tight game 'I just don't get it.And again Pilaras has done nothing again but Brenson B. Has earned a spot on this roster.

There's a reason Bellicheck pulled Brady and it wasn't for anything but strategy!
BITCH move, not an issue classic Bellichek. National guys will eat this up! First take will gobble it up like thanksgiving. Far as I can tell when Brady went out we relaxed!
Disgusted no less but looked like we were a 1,2 or 3rd team behind them the whole game! I know it was mixed/matched but looks as if we were not equally matched each quarter after the first! I could b wrong.
Looks like Bitchiechek was trying too pacify the masses!

Cam is still missing open receivers like Olsen and these other receivers that were brought in Avant...Cotchery...they never get open or at lest not in pre season??????? I think our success is in us keeping the receivers that did the best in pure season which from what I saw are Brenson Bersin...Benjermin...King....and all 3 tight end....Makes you think what kind of team we will have this year.

The 40 yard TD by Vereeni was disgusting. AJ and entire secondary bit on fake! That was classic Cluster Fk! As far as I can tell these opponents coaches have not been as vanilla/passive game plan as us coming in to games!!!

Agreed we have got to sprinkle in some King, Bersin with Benjamin and we'll be fine. underwood or philly and we have what people don't know speed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the only way Cam is successful on this or any team is to do what Seattle has done, We need a mean tough smash mouth O-line and a coordinator that does`nt care about being called dirty names because the blocking scheme he implements...I Call it winning and if I have to call some plays that others call cheap shots but we get a super bowl ring out of it then so be it...THAT`S CALLED NFL FOOTBALL...its a warriors game.
