Panthers' list of final cuts

The Panthers released their 53-man roster just minutes after Saturday's 4 p.m. deadline.

Safety Robert Lester, receiver Tavarres King, guard Chris Scott and cornerback Josh Thomas headlined the group of players released.

The other players cut are listed here: CB Carrington Byndom, G Derek Dennis, CB James Dockery, LB Adarius Glanton, WR Marcus Lucas, T Andrew McDonald, S Tom Nelson, DT Drake Nevis, RB Darrin Reaves, DT Micanor Regis, LB D.J. Smith, DT Casey Walker, FB Mike Zordich, T Kevin Hughes, TE Mike McNeill and S Anderson Russell.

Hughes was waived/injured. McNeill (knee) and Zordich (knee) were waived after reaching an injury settlement.

Canadian tackle David Foucault and undrafted free agent guard Andrew Norwell made the team. According to a league source, the Panthers had planned to cut Foucault and put him on their practice squad, but there was a fear he would be claimed off waivers by another team in the 24-hour window and they would lose out on the tackle. LB Ben Jacobs won out the final linebacker spot over Smith and Allen.

The Panthers keep four safeties in Roman Harper, Thomas DeCoud, Tre Boston and Colin Jones, and Charles Godfrey can be the emergency fifth safety after cutting Lester and Russell.

Carolina likes what it's seen from veteran guard Fernando Velasco, and the team also feels confident rookie guard Trai Turner will be healthy for the season opener against Tampa Bay. Those factors led to Scott's cut despite Scott getting the start at right guard Thursday at Pittsburgh.

Thomas, a fourth-year cornerback, started in six games for the Panthers last year. Thomas, who didn't make many plays this preseason, was squeezed out by Godfrey's conversion to cornerback and the addition of Bene' Benwikere.

DE Frank Alexander does not count against the 53-man roster due to his four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Should the Panthers add him to the roster after Week 4, they'll have to make a corresponding move.

Carolina will add 10 players to its practice squad, and some of them are likely to come from this group of recent cuts.

I figured TK was on his way out of the door. He'll catch on elsewhere I believe after all the cut or complete today we will add two WRs and a few OL

How many cuts were needed at the start of the day? It looks like 5 have been made this morning. Can you post a countdown of how many cuts still need to be made?

Why would we cut tavarres king? I liked him a lot. That was a bad move IMO .

Cut Anderson. And pick up some OT help already, it's embarrassing.

Taurus,
You can only carry so many WRs, which one would you have cut in his place? It likely came down to between he and Philly Brown and they clearly liked Brown in the return role. The last WR was going to have to be a return man.

@ Bill 75 to 53 equals 22. Minus the seven cuts known at this time leaves 15 moves left to be made, at least.

John - thanks. I didn't remember the starting number. It will make the watch easier to follow.

Bill,

I don't have the previous roster count right in front of me, but assuming they started this round with the max. 75 man roster and they have to cut to 53, that means 22 cuts total.

I liked King, hopefully we can find a way to stash him. I think Bersin proved to be a more consistent threat, and Brown proved he could not only be a return man but be an occasional downfield threat. I'm a tad alarmed we are letting Chris Scott go, I hope Gettleman signs at least 1-2 OTs off the waiver wire .. We are critically thin at the tackle position.

Anyone know if we're keeping Lucas?

Posted by: Adam | Aug 30, 2014 11:51:49 AM

I sure don't see where Cotchery is any better.

Posted by: T Stone | Aug 30, 2014 12:09:49 PM

I hope josh Norman is next on this list, we need better depth at corner than him and josh thomas

Do we still have Wr Marcus Lucas? Didn't see his name anywhere

I am SICK of this bs. Why the hell did we cut King? Stupid ass move. He was a good and dedicated receiver

Posted by: tim hyp | Aug 30, 2014 12:55:47 PM

I think we cut King b/c of injury but will prob sign him to practice squad if he clears

Posted by: Midnitethud | Aug 30, 2014 1:12:36 PM

We should sign a sure handed punt returner.Philly bobbles to many punts and no yards on the ones he does returns

Posted by: Midnitethud | Aug 30, 2014 1:14:54 PM

I think we cut Scott because he wasn't ready and didn't prepare for the preseason. I think where looking for better players. King did alright but I think he need a way better preseason to stay on the roster with returning at all. I like all the moves. Brown drop a few punts. So I think that why their going after another return guy.

Norwell kid from Ohio State make it? Tough, nasty kid.

Please get a OT or OG off the wire...alot of good teams let some go due to being loaded at the position. Some teams worst OT/OG's are better than some of our so called starters.

Posted by: OT HELP | Aug 30, 2014 2:03:30 PM

BUT: Please don't get any OT/OG from Tamp or Colts

Posted by: OT HELP | Aug 30, 2014 2:05:31 PM

Foucault brought back to the Roster.

Posted by: Nick | Aug 30, 2014 2:08:31 PM

Look out for Dennis Roland (Chicago) if healthy he could be a steel...just saying

Posted by: OT HELP | Aug 30, 2014 2:11:12 PM

Why keep Philly? He fair catches when he shouldn't, and when he doesn't fair catch, he falls down without being touched. Good to see that Rivera and Gettleman will cut a draft choice after one year. John Fox hung on to some guys too long to avoid admitting a mistake.

Posted by: Ben | Aug 30, 2014 2:30:43 PM

Wow, cutting Lester is stupid. Hopefully they can bring him back on the practice squad.
