Cam Newton misses practice with sore ribs
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton did not participate in Wednesday's practice after experiencing soreness in his cracked ribs.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he's not sure whether Newton will practice Thursday, but Rivera remains confident Newton will start Sunday's season opener at Tampa Bay.
Rivera was asked why he's optimistic about Newton's status.
"Because of who he is," Rivera said.
Newton was on the practice field for the 30 minutes the media were allowed in Wednesday. But he spent most of that time working with head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion on the fit of his custom flak jacket.
Rivera said Newton left practice early to return to Bank of America Stadium to receive treatment on his ribs. He was not made available to the media.
Newton sustained a hairline fracture of the ribs Aug. 22 against New England when Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins kneed him in the lower back at the end of Newton's 7-yard scramble.
Newton, who underwent offseason ankle surgery, has not missed a start in his first three NFL seasons. He's only been sidelined for a handful of plays due to injury.
Backup quarterback Derek Anderson got most of the first-team reps Wednesday.

I've had rib injuries as sure many of you have and day to day regular life it's painful! I would sit him minimum of first 2 games or we will regret it later this season. Or it'll be play a week miss a week all season, may be that all season anyway.

Let's push Cam and use his ego to get him really good and hurt. I hope Joe Webb is learning the entire playbook. May need a quarterback who can do reads and get the ball off quickly since we don't have an O-line.

Sit him and let Anderson do it. Don't want to have him sitting on season!

I wonder if the defense will get tired of carrying the offense this season? Can you say John Fox football?

If Cams not 100% he should sit ,5 will get you 10 The defense coordinator of the Buccs has said if you get a hit make it count they will gunn for Cam, We need him long term coach imagine how Cam will feel after the game ,If Cam runs the ball they will try to hit him hard , I would assume Cams play calling will be more passing anyway,if so I would start Derek. But do call a round the end or miss direction for Derek ,the Buccs will be completly caught off guard.
