Horton: Panthers need to 'take a shot' at Wilson when he runs

Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson is coming his second 100-yard rushing game of the season last weekend against St. Louis, and at least one Carolina defender says the Panthers have to make Wilson pay a price when he leaves the pocket.

Defensive end Wes Horton says the Panthers need to "take a shot" at Wilson when he takes off running.

"He's pretty much like a running back back there with the way he can scramble. So we've just got to plaster him and, in some cases, take a shot," Horton said Thursday.

"If you see him in space, you run full speed at him, get your hands on him and try to take him down. We know he's elusive and we know he's going to try to shake and spin and do all those things we've seen on tape."

Panthers coach Ron Rivera has watched teams take shots on his quarterback when Cam Newton runs, so he's all for his defense getting after Wilson. But Rivera says Wilson knows how to avoid a hit.

"He played baseball, so he knows how to slide," Rivera said.

Kiss of death. The problem is if you concentrate on Wilson to much, he'll torch the secondary and make a big throw. Pick your poison

Time to quit being Passive Carolina, Give Us and the League a BREAK! Nowhere on sports channels are you mention, and Carolina is playing the Super Bowl champs? It's sad they are sooo bad it covers up who they are playing. Bring Back That Nasty toughness that Smith and Hardy brought that is painfully missing!

Panthers, keep doing what your doing and you will keep getting what your getting.

ELUSIVE is the key word from Horton. One thing about not being tall is that it's easier to be quick and avoid the hit. Don't worry about the big hit, just tackle.

I will trade Cam and Rivera for Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll.

OK I will throw in the Top Cats and all our draft picks next year...

Still no? DAMMMIT!

Hey Wes, How bout just worrying about doing your job and applying some pressure along with stopping the run all together. Need I say something you've failed to do so far while filling in for Hardy. Go Panthers

I'm voting for Pedro

This is a tuff row to hoe, As hungry as the Hawks are for a win and they almost got it last week I see no way for us to win this game,I think Russel Wilson will out play Cam and there team is way more talented than the panthers,The only way we have a chance is for seattle to get plagued with a lot of pass interference penaltys and we luck up and win a close one but I dont see that happening,Also for all the fans thinking were going to beat the Saints on a prime time game on Thursday night dont hold your breath just be honest with yourselfs 5 will get you 10 Breeze will pick apart this defense it will be easy pickens and the sad thing about is Cam is no match in a shootout against Breeze They will out score us so its not looking good at all.

Gettleman ,Rivera please here me out, If we dont sign Hardy and we dont sign Cam and use that money to solidify our defense and finish with a bad record this year meaning lose most of the remaining games to get a good draft spot next year say 2ND OR 3RD in each round we could be back in the driver seat and have plenty of money to pick up free agents like Peppers ,Allen, ect. We could use our 1st pick on a accurate pocket passer and we already have great running backs pick up a LT on offense and more O linemen and keep QB Anderson to teach the new accurate QB, This senario would be the fastest way for us to get out of cap hell with all that dead money we owe out. It would make us a contender quick ,Tell me your not going to waste all of our money on Cam and Hardy and thats it we get no better cause we will be broke for years.

Im not hating on no one Im just sharing a plan that would get us out of being a laughing stock in this league, Cam and Hardy are great athletes I myself do not think Cam is worthy of Payton Manning,Aaron Rodgers,Tom Brady money. And we can pick up a Hardy type in free agency for 1yr contract.

For all of you commenting that we should let Cam walk, or that hes not on the level of Wilson, or even that we cant compete in a shootout: stop blaming cam. Whos his deep threat? Philly Brown? Couldnt catch a cold with no coat in Antarctica deep. His so called reliable hands dropped a perfectly thrown pass in the endzone against perfect coverage in overtime against Cincy. Our other old timer has shown up in one game. Benjamin and Olsen are our passing game, and you cant fault Cam that everyone he trusted beside Olsen was sent walking. The fact that hes not worth Peyton Rodgers or Brees money doesnt defeat the fact of the matter that is above average working his way towards top 8, hes already cracked top 10, and hes grown leaps and bounds over the last 3 seasons. Get your heads out of your butts and stop messing with the best quarterback that we've had ever as a franchise. Notice i didnt mention Hardy, after his legal issues play out depending on what hes commanding we may want to keep him. But not at the risk of giving Cam more weapons. And for Gods sake draft and impact running back to come play the role of a Giovanni Bernard type player.

If the Bears gave Jay Cutler all that money I dont see why they wont give Cam his money. Cam is a franchise QB hands down and I will be pissed if they let him go. For you forever fans that you call yourselves how can you even get your fingers to write "GET RID OF CAM!!" WE have had the likes of Chris Weinke, David Carr, Vinny Testeverde, and yes he led us to a Super Bowl but I mean Jake was defintelty not great. You so called Panthers fans kill me. Cam is hands down the best QB and maybe best athlete to come through Carolina, and if you dont want him here, we dont want you as fans. Chud let Cam do to much, and Shula wont let Cam do enough. We need Chip Kelly as an OC.. (I know that is only in my dreams.) Cam can make every throw and he can run it. What else do you want. None of this matters though when all your money is taken up by a RB core who hasnt played a full season in I dont know how long. A make shift O-line and a defense who has suddenly forgot there purpose of being on the field. I love Cam and I love my Panthers. And if you love your team like you say you do you will love who puts that jersey on. I still hear more love for Steve Smith and Jake Delhomme and Julius Peppers than Cam Newton. Like who you want, but none of those old Panther players you love gave us a Super Bowl, or back to back winning seasons. You people need to love your team no matter the moves you question. ON another note third times a charm with these darn Seahawks. We will get it done. KEEP POUNDING to the TRU PANTHERS FAN. AND YOU FAIR WEATHER FANS..... WE DONT NEED YOU!!!

I'll just sprinkle a little crack on him.

@#1 Panthers Fan- That was Jerricho Cotchery that dropped that pass. Not Philly. Get your facts straight before you call a player out.

Ok...Mister Anonymous...find somewhere else to Troll!! But on a serious note I believe that Can is our QB of the future. What a lot of Cam haters dont realize is that these guys that he's compared to has a much better supporting cast. I've seen the likes of Tannehill,Wilson, Luck, even Kapernick have a solid OL built to protect these guys. Not to mention a great receiving corps. So to say that its fair to compare these players to Cam...would certainly be unfair. Hey and lets not forget the Luck scandal of him returning to college so that he wouldn't have to play with the Panthers!! Wow speaking of guys taking the easy road! So with that said Gettleman really needs to address theae issues this year...or else continue to hinder Cams progression. He's made lemonade from lemons long enough.

Hey all you Dum Ass fans that want Smith and Hardy
for get it I am glad they are gone. Smith has drop last 3 years, Hardy like to beat on women. Don't need they on the team. Time to go young on this team. Now Cam and Rivera should be traded.

Posted by: Joseph Holbert | Oct 24, 2014 10:20:48 AM

wilson is 4X the qb that Cam is. wilson doesn't have the physical tools that Cam has, but more than makes up for it with his mental capacity AND hard work.

yea that damn Luck felt that the colts were a better team than us...and maybe he was right

Because we have been loyal fans since 1995 and we all know what it takes these days in the NFL to not just get to a superbowl but to win it,It starts with a top Accurate quick reads QB with some mobility,Brady,Manning,Breeze,Rodgers, must I continue Steve young Montana, Elway,Aikman, ect. All these have one common factor there very quick with reads and are accurate,Now we all have been schooled on what a franchise QB 101 should have.I believe Cam can get it done but how many years to build a top 5 defense thats consistant and a top 5 offense thats consistant he would need that for us to make it,If thats the case were looking at 5 to 6 years ,In the nfl you cant keep players a unit together that long everybody wants the bi bucks and they jump ship thats why an accurate QB keeps drives alive and is so detrimental to a team these days.

Indy learnt this from having manning thats why and only why they threw away there season to get LUCK they were smart,Kudos to them .

Running backs have no holes to run threw ,Candy ass o-line cant control the line of scrimmage.Matthews made Bell look like a chump,Wow 240 lb linebacker pancaking a 340lb tackle thats not right, Bell bring some attitude with your blocking man.Man Up Bell

Posted by: Anonymous | Oct 24, 2014 2:54:56 PM

Ok I will agree Cam doesnt have a great o-line in front of him but the ? is how do we get great o-linmen and pay Hardy,Cam,Keukly,Benjermin, remember these days everybody wants 50 million up contracts look a Charles Johnsons contract 76 milion over 5 years so were is the money coming from to pay to get a good oline ,Kalils contract is 60 million thats the 2 highest players on this team as of now unless they sign Cam and Keukly then they will be the highest paid on this team ,What Im saying is how on earth does Denver get the players they have and stay under the cap it just doesnt add up.Honestly good luck Gettelman it must be pure hell tryin to come up with a plan.

Guys dont blame the coach he teaches them how to win the players just dont execute plain and simple ,Weve seen this before look at Fox coaching at Denver and enjoying playoff after playoff and superbowl appearances Its not the coach but then again if Fox had a QB when he was here as good as the ones named above and we just had a winning record every year he would still be coaching in carolina.
