Panthers to start new O-line vs. Falcons; Johnson questionable

With third-year guard Amini Silatolu doubtful for Sunday's game against Atlanta, the Panthers are preparing to use their sixth different offensive line combination in as many games.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he expects rookies Andrew Norwell and Trai Turner to start at the guard spots against Atlanta. Turner, a third-round pick from LSU, returns to the lineup after missing three games with knee and ankle injuries.

The line will try to do a better job protecting Cam Newton, who was sacked a franchise record-tying nine times in a Monday night loss at Philadelphia.

Defensive end Charles Johnson was excused for the second day in a row Friday to be with his ailing grandmother in Georgia. Rivera said the hope is Johnson will be back before Sunday's game.

Running backs DeAngelo Williams, who missed two practices this week with a foot injury, returned Friday and is listed as probable for Sunday's game. Rivera said Williams would get the start over Jonathan Stewart.

Defensive tackle Star Lotulelei (ankle), a first-round pick in 2013, will miss the first game of his career. Veteran Colin Cole will start in Lotulelei's spot.

I luv me some DWill but no way he should be starting over JStew. JStew has been running with authority lately and brakes tackles. When your OLine sucks as bad as this one, you need a RB that can break tackles.

Please start Stewart over Williams. He is playing much better than Williams

I like our O-line interior with Kalil, Trai back, and Norwell. Norwell plays like he just wants to drive somebody into the ground every play. We just need to go to a 2 tight end set protect the edges so we dont get Cam blasted Sunday.

WILLIAMS SEEM TO BE RUNNING SCARED OR SOMETHING. I DONT KNOW IF HIS MOTHER NOT BEING AROUND IS EFFECTING HIS MENTAL PLAY. BUT RIGHT NOW HE'S NOT THE SAME D-WILL THAT HE WAS BEFORE. ITS LIKE HIS VISION ISN'T THERE OR ANYTHING. BEFORE HE WOULD HIT THE HOLE FAST AND HARD,. NOW IT SEEMS LIKE ALL YOU SEE IS HIM GOING INTO THE GAPS WHERE DEFENDERS ARE THERE. AND HIS BODY IS MADE TO ELUDE NOT GET HIT. STEWART ISN'T MUCH BETTER RIGHT NOW. BUT HE'S THE BETTER OPTION. HIS BODY HAS LESS MILES ON IT.

Falcons 28 Panthers 10. Time to start looking at the draft. Just sayin'

we have 12 to 15 players other teams might trade for. we have no second string and therefore no special team talent either.

Nobody wanted me on the team when I was hurt.

Yea everyone hated on Stewart when he was hurt. I knew he just needed time to heal to get back that explosive running style we need for Cam. I like d-will too but my vote goes for Stewart.

Gettleman should have been fired after the Eagles game as well as both guards and tackles. He caused this debacle in the first place. Brady, Rodgers, or Manning could have been behind that line and not won that game. We can't run or pass which will make it hard to win another game this season. We might beat the Vikings or Bucs. Maybe both, but the rest are losses. Not sure why we are not playing Hardy either. We have nothing to lose. He'll be with the Raiders next season anyway.

The Panthers have a reputation to live down with the release of Steve Smith along with the flight of some experienced WR's. Research does show that the Panther players who leave seem to do well with a different coach and team. WHO CURRENTLY TRAIN
CAM NEWTON, AS THE PANTHER QUARTERBACK? What type of training or coaching is Cam receiving? Are we going to see something different because what is being taught DOES NOT WORK?

The powers that be should be looking at drafting another QB and I don't care about O-line/Ankle whatever in a contract year Cam is at his worst and every team that has a pass rush and decent DB's are beating the Panthers and he isn't accurate and has NO touch and struggles VS tight coverage VS playoff teams so, time for Cam to go!

It really doesnt matter,We are not capable of winning the remaining games so I say lets put ourself in a better position for next years draft I mean think about it if we beat Atlanta and beat Tampa and beat saints but lose the remaining games our division rivals will get a better spot than us and most likely get the player we need the most such as OT so while we have this oppertunity lets make the best of it.

Gettleman this team is hurting on both sides of the ball please don`t give out any ridiculous contracts such as Hardy or Cam or anyone else. We need many players at so many positions than to give it to a couple,Put the franchise tag on Cam when his contract come due let that year be the decision year , See if he earns it by Merit and nothing else.

please fire rivera, why not give scott a chance? bell and chandler are the worst tackles in the nfl .
id rather have joe person and jones playing tackle then those idiots .
bench bell and chandler let another tackle off practice squad or mike remmers get a chance.
secoundary . bench cason put in dockery in assuming bene is back or play melvin at the other cb spot

The Panthers look like a little league this year. If we had kept Smith, I don't think we would be having this problem. I think in a long run Benjamin will work out, until then, we have got to get some protection for CAM. Man can't do it alone. I said last year it was time to find a new GM and Coach. We are a whole new team, they train together, how come they can't get the connections together. Gets worst every week. We let all our good players get away, so where do we go from here? Gotta sit and wait for another season to began. I love the Panthers, I don't think we are a running team, if Cam doesn't run, we don't get any yards. A blind man can see that. NO ONE MAN CAN WIN A GAME ALONE. Don't blame Cam for all our loses. I just hope we do better on this last leg of the season. Get us some receivers PLEASE. I like Stewart but he's no Steve Smith. Everybody getting paid, they need to step up and do their job. Lets get it together here PANTHERS. I know we can take care of Atlanta.

If we are to have a chance to win this game Coach you must put Derek Anderson in now, Why will you not at least try to give this team a spark with Anderson ,Listen to the crowd,do it now

2 things that will greatly improve Cam,Work on ball placement and pocket awareness,
Ball placement: lead your receivers if he has a step you must place the ball were the receiver can use his reach in the direction he`s running not jumping up that will break his momentum ,See this old clicha about if the receiver touches it he should of caught has gone out the window unless he drops a perfect thrown pass. It`s on the QB if the receiver has to jump or slow down and that needs to be said to Cam.
2. Cam has an problem taking to much time reading the field I believe this falls on Dorsey and Shula , Cam needs it drilled into his head you can only look that direction for a split second dont wait for it to develope cause then your on your back or your other reads are covered , So go to your next read , Bottom line is Cam needs to practice the silent clock that I blame Dorsey for ,Dorsey every time Cam gets ready to take the field you should embed in his mind and say remember you only have 3 to 4 seconds to have that ball out of your hands, Dorsey who ever calls in the plays to Cam from the sideline needs to say REMEMBER THE SILENT CLOCK every time after they call in the play and also add in a pump fake to one side then throw to the other, this is basic stuff yet week in and out you don`t see Cam using these tools,Dorsey why are you employed better yet does anyone in this panther organization ever get called out for there group not being prepared?????
5 will get you 10 none of this has been practiced on this week,Prove me wrong then, Its on you now!SHOW ME
