Trai Turner 'doing his best' to recruit, show support for La'el Collins

Panthers offensive guard Trai Turner is another in a long list of friends and former teammates of La’el Collins who have reached out to the talented offensive tackle to make his pitch for his team.

Collins went undrafted last weekend because there was too much uncertainty with why police in Baton Rouge wanted to speak with him in connection to a double murder.

Brittney Mills, a 29-year-old pregnant woman believed to be Collins’ ex girlfriend, was shot and killed on April 24. Her son, Brenton, was delivered by cesarean section but died a week later.

Police in Baton Rouge have said Collins is “still not a suspect,” but a Panthers source told me the team is in wait-and-see mode until he is completely cleared, if and when that happens.

Turner and Collins are close friends from their time on the LSU offensive line, and Turner—last year’s third-round pick for Carolina—told fans via Twitter today that he has made his pitch to Collins.

Several of Collins’ former teammates at LSU who play for the Dolphins took a flight to meet with him Tuesday. Former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has reached out to Collins urging him to pick the Buccaneers in undrafted free agency.

Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan met Collins for dinner last night, though it’s unclear if that broke NFL rules or if Ryan simply circumvented them.

Still, I’m told the Panthers are playing it safe until there’s a clear resolution that does not involve Collins in this tragic situation.

Johnathon Jones, I read your blog yesterday where you said you'd be surprised if he signs with the Panthers. How about doing us a favor and keep your negativity to yourself, because you don't know what they're going to do, as your mock draft showed...Oh, you did get one right though. Well even a blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then, but it doesn't make them Nostradamus.

With 32 team in the league, you would think one would have staked a late round pick on his innocence and getting cleared. Why didn't one - esp. Rexy since he had no problem taking him to dinner! My guess is its because the NFL has become too hellbent to protect its image from anything that may be perceived as a tarnish. It seems everybody is running scared from the politically correct junkies these days and this may be another sad example.

@ Joe

Jonathan Jones said he would be surprised, not that he did not want them to do it.

That's called having an opinion!

Stop your negative whining you miserable prick!

@ Clay

Why so sensitive internet tough guy? Based off your response you sound like the one who's miserable & a prick. Did I offend your boyfriend?

Pray for the kid first. He may have suffered a lifetime of lost in the last few weeks. If it all checks out, pray he sees the Panthers as a good opportunity. Would love to see Williams at LG with Turner and Collins holding down the right side.

Yo, yo, I understand Joe Shmoe, but in order for you to know, you must also wear a mask tho..... johnny????? your iq is much too low.... dumb ho

No team drafted him in rounds 4 to 7 because La'el stated through his agent he would refuse to sign a contract if drafted after round 3. La'el wanted a solid first contract or the ability to sign a UDFA contract and thus be able to renegotiate his contract after 2 years.

La'el Collins should run for his life if the Panthers try to sign him. That's coming from a DIE HARD fan of the Panthers from Day one. They WILL NOT stand behind you with any legal issues. If public opinion sways against you then you're gone. Go elsewhere la'el.

BigCat, a team should have taken him in the second or third. There is the very real possibility he had no involvement. Everybody runs scared of a protest these days.

I would have taken him with a mid first round pick. Innocent til proven guilty and besides, if Manziel can go in the first with all his known baggage, why can't Collins go when it's just speculation.

I agree with Kyle:

Let's pray for the kid first. He may have suffered a lifetime of lost in the last few weeks. He needs support, not be a cast off. If it all checks out, pray he sees the Panthers as a good opportunity. Would love to see Williams at LG with Turner and Collins holding down the right side

goose i agree....

not to compare murder to knee injuries, but the risk reward of gurley at 10 vs. collins at 10 was pretty comparable.

and now the paternity test came back negative and the police aren't even calling the guy a person of interest, let alone a suspect. they should be doing EVERYTHING possible to get this guy under contract and then subsequently investigating the matter further as to not get blindsided later if by some small chance the guy did have something to do with it.

doesn't seem likely at all. whole thing seems bizarre and unamerican.

as if the cowboys needed another stud lineman. jesus. mcfadden might not get tackled this year.

gettleman asleep at the wheel.

Posted by: charlottean | May 7, 2015 2:32:04 PM

i hate to bring it up but after Ray Carruth are the Panthers willing to take the chance on Collins.

Posted by: shots956 | May 7, 2015 3:29:57 PM

Not Gettleman and u know that!
Richardson is steering away from all guys with issues, no matter what. The WHAT is.... Too a fault!

Posted by: 10-4!! | May 8, 2015 10:32:24 PM

I would bet Carruth was less a factor than Hardy. But what are the other 31 teams reasons?? My suspicion is Goodell and team owners have gotten too caught up in wearing pink in October and patting themselves on the back as a socially aware / raise the conscienciousness / blahblahblah league. For a team to use any draft pick on Collins would have challenged that sales pitch so NFL leadership probably pushed hard for all teams to not draft him. So, an innocent Collins went undrafted and signs for a minimum after being cleared. Hardy had all charges dropped and the case was dismissed but gets cut in Car and gets ready for a 10 game suspension in Dallas. Of course the cherry on top being the NFLs showcase game. Car @ Dallas. That is all.

It wouldn't matter if we did get La'el Collins, because Cam is still AWFUL and full of himself!
