In the press box at Virginia Tech there was more talk about Appalachian State’s victory against Michigan than any other game played Saturday, including the one at Virginia Tech.
About every 10 minutes, then five and then two, somebody would shout a Mountaineers update. You would have thought it was a meeting of the Appalachian State Alumni Club.
We’re all professional journalists, of course, as objective as the trip from Blacksburg, Va., to Charlotte is long.
But it was like a party. Even a Virginia Tech employee stepped out of the hallway during a postgame news conference to offer his congratulations.
Several national writers postponed the trip home to head to Boone, which means if Boone has a Marriott property, it is now booked.
The first full day of football is not complete and already the country has a new team to cheer.
How about giving Appalachian State some more recognition when it comes to the sports section of the observer? We Alum like to here about our team every now and then, instead of those guys at the Hill. Why stop at the Hill when you can go all the way to the Mountain.
