The new GolfWorld poll is out and the Charlotte 49er golf team is ranked No. 1. South Carolina is 8, Duke is 13, Wake Forest is 16, Clemson is 18 and Minnesota is among other teams receiving votes. Alabama is No. 2. Right. That Tuscaloosa stuff might work in Mobile, Montgomery and Talladega, but I'd like to see the Crimson Tide even try to bring it to Charlotte. Being No. 1 is great for fans who can now go to golf matches wearing a giant Styrofoam hand with a giant Styrofoam index finger extended. After putts and before drives they'll chant "We're No. 1!" with so much vigor and enthusiasm that residents of the houses that adjoin the golf course will begin to yell. There's nothing like golf to give students a reason to get excited about school. If you've watched a football game at Nebraska or a basketball game at Duke you know how students get. The question is never, are you going to the game. The question is, who are you going with and how early will you get there and how will we get tickets? I hope Charlotte saves seats for students because the Gang Green fans that cram into Halton Arena for basketball games can give their team a home-course advantage. They'll get on an opposing coach the way they used to get on Cincinnati basketball coach Bobby Huggins and officials will become influenced by the pandemonium and soon all the calls will seem to go against the visitors and next thing you know the coach of the opposing team is hit with a technical. The students are clever, too. They know all the popular golf taunts, the most popular of which are "Block that putt!" and "Slice, hook, wedge, hit the ball into the hedge!" Being No. 1 is more than about students. Alumni who look for a reason to return to campus have one more. They see the pep rallies and the bonfires and suddenly they feel 20 again. Most of us never attain No. 1. I'm happy for the team. I'm also happy for the fans. Tailgating will be even more fun.
