Why shouldn't I write about boxing?

Here's what happens when I write a column about boxing.

Five readers say, "We used to like you and as soon as you stop writing about boxing we will like you again."

Three others say, "We don't like you and now we like you even less."

Two more say, "Nobody cares about boxing."

If I wanted to write only about our leading sports, I would write four columns a week about the Carolina Panthers, one about North Carolina basketball, one about Steve Spurrier and one about Dale Earnhardt Jr.

But I love boxing. And in Calvin Brock we have a guy who grew up in our town and went to our schools and played in our parks and worships in our churches and at 11 p.m. Friday night will fight undefeated Fast Eddie Chambers on Showtime's ShowBox: The New Generation.

If Brock wins, he fights undefeated Alexander Povetkin, and if Brock wins that one, he gets a rematch with Wladimir Klitschko - which I can spell without looking up - for the title.

I don't know how many viewers will watch. I suspect the ratings will be down there with the 2007 World Series.

But do we all have to stick with what's popular? Should we all wear shirts with horses on them and drive SUVs that are bigger than our neighbors' SUV, and maybe their house, and watch CSI: Gastonia?

Stand up for what you believe. I believe Californication is the best show on TV. I believe the Robert Plant-Allison Krauss collaboration is three to seven times as good as the new Eagles' CD. And I believe that on a busy Charlotte sports night, with the Bobcats opening the season at home and Independence playing Butler, the Brock fight will be worth hustling home for.
