The non-football story that people were talking about in Phoenix Friday afternoon, at least in my part of Phoenix, was the NBA trade that sent Pau Gasol from Memphis to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Lakers fans should be thrilled. Now Kobe Bryant has another teammate not to pass to.
I've never been a Kobe fan, but he is shooting less this season and, not coincidentally, his team is winning more. Gasol is talented and unselfish and, if Kobe shares, the Lakers could join San Antonio and Phoenix among the NBA West elite, which is to say the NBA elite.
I realize I'm the first to think of this, but if Boston comes out of the East and Los Angeles comes out of the West the NBA's greatest rivalry again would matter.
Friday was a great day for the Lakers and for the NBA.
