Tiger's injury may benefit John Daly

At least one good thing could come out of Tiger Woods’ injury: sponsor exemptions for John Daly. If golfers such as Stewart Cink continue to win tournaments, television ratings will continue to sink. Daly might be struggling, but he is still among the sport’s biggest draws.

   Free John! But make him wear a shirt.

   I can’t tell you the best movie I’ve seen this summer because I have yet to go to a theater. But I’ve read four books the last three weeks, and the best of them is “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein. The narrator is a dog. Dogs know more than we think and this proves it. The book is warm and funny and there’s a quiet power to it.

star Bill Mazeroski will throw out the first pitch tonight when the Pirates play the New York Yankees. I remember rushing home from school in 1960 and asking my mom how the Yankees did – everybody not aligned with a team loved Mickey Mantle and the Yankees then – and she told me Mazeroski hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth and the Pirates won the World Series four games to three.

   I cried.  I can’t fathom caring enough about a sporting event, not now, not at my age, to cry.

   And that’s good.
