The crowd in front of the infield media center at Lowe's Motor Speedway grew. The fans with pre-race infield credentials were supplemented by television and newspaper reporters. That reporters were outside and the food would be served inside implied that Jessica Simpson, who will perform before the Bank of America 500, was about to arrive.
"Is that her?" somebody asked when he saw a slender blonde doing an interview atop a platform in the distance.
No, it was Cindy McCain, wife of John McCain, the Republican candidate for president. As Cindy McCain was led to the media center, security guards pushed the crowd backward and formed an opening large enough for an offensive line to comfortably pass.
Finally McCain moved through, and some fans leaned forward and took pictures and clapped. She wore jeans and a black sweater and her hair was very blonde. Then she disappeared inside.
"How do I get in there?" an elderly woman asked somewhat desperately.
You have to have a media credential, somebody told her.
"I have a big mouth," the woman said.
