What's taking so long? Nothing like waiting until the last minute.

Brian

Maybe it's all for dramatic effect...

Jordan Gross is public enemy #1 if he holds out after the deadline for a little more grease in his pocket. There has to be a balance between a good contract and fairness to the team you will play for, for the next 5 years.

Bob Getsinger

Wonder if Peppers wants to try pro basketball? Maybe 2 sport athelete? Sounds like something Mark Cuban in Dallas would love.

wahoo

This is not going to end well folks. I sure hope ole BigCat is not even listening to the worthless crap spewing out of Julius Peppers big ole horse mouth and dripping down his sorry chin.

towelboy

best case scenario: we sign gross and tag peppers (then trade pepp for picks)

worst case scenario: we tag gross and let peppers walk for no compensation or we tag peppers and let gross test the market (hoping he will return here)

absolutely worse case scenario and not likely to happen: we tag no one and let both walk.

Good riddance to Pep, I enjoyed his stay, up until the last month, now he's just worn out his welcome. Gross is grating on my nerves too for holding off this long and putting the TEAM in this predicament. Sign and play and let us get something for #90's worthless behind.

I agree, the topics becoming tedious, but I keep checking the web, nevertheless.

One thought I haven’t read: If Jordan Gross becomes a free agent, is any other team going to offer him more than the Panthers are offering now?

If not, and if he likes playing/living here, what’s the hold up?

If he does become a free agent, might he sign with the Panthers after testing the water?

SRoger:
franchise LTs get paid in this league. there is a good chance another team would offer more money. from what i hear, gross really likes it here, but this is his best chance in his career to negotiate a HUGE salary. keep in mind he is the highest sought after LT this offseason and he is coming off a probowl year. right now he is financially setting himself up for the future. he may test the free agency to drive up his costs and then resign with carolina. but the panthers front office has to be concerned that if he tests the waters, we'll lose him and peppers.
i think we'll end up overpaying him to stay and then we'll tag and trade peppers to the highest bidder.

Peppers is going to be like cancer to a different team, just like Terrell Owens.. Other buyer/teams stay away and let him go play basketball

A BOY NAMED JORDAN?

ITS TOO BAD A GUY WITH THE FAMOUS WORLD RENOWNED FIRST NAME OF A GREAT ROMAN LEADER JULIUS CEASAR AS IN PEPPERS BUT THE GUY HAS NEVER BEEN OUTSIDE THE STATE OF NC PLAYING HIGH SCHOOL AT BLUE SOUTHERN NASH 4O MILES NE OF RALEIGH IN ROCKY MOUNT/NASHVILLE ( NOT THE ONE IN TENN ) AND THEN AT UNC TARHEELAND AND THEN CAROLINALAND BUT DONT WORRY HE WILL BE BACK IN THE END TO FINISH OUT HIS CAREER AND WILL HAVE NOTHING TO SHOW AND NO SUPER BOWL RINGS.

IT WOULD BE VERY IRONIC IF CAROLINA WOULD WIN THE SUPER BOWL AFTER HE IS TRADED AND THEN HE WOULD CRY AND CRY EVEN MORE IF THE TEAM THE PANTHERS BEAT IN THE BIG BOWL WOULD BE HIS NEW ADOPTED TEAM BUT THIS IS HIS CALL NOT THE PANTHERS SO HE WILL LIVE WITH HIS DECISION EVEN THOUGH GETTING THE HELL OUT OF DODGE IS NOT A BAD THING.

ON ANOTHER NOTE THE GUY WHO WILL BE SIGNED AGAIN OVER JP WILL BE A MALE WITH A GIRLS NAME JORDAN. THIS MAY BE FRIVILOUS BUT DOES HE HAVE A MIDDLE NAME AND WHAT IS IT? THE ONLY JORDANS WE HAVE EVER SEEN WERE FEMALES ALTHOUGH HE IS A GOOD PLAYER AND STRONG LINEMAN. JORDAN IS ALSO A COMMON LAST NAME.
THIS IS LIKE THE STUPID DUMB IDIOT JOHNNY CASH SONG "A GIRL NAMES SUE" ... NEVERMIND.

Looks like Gross is going to sign today and the franchise tag goes to Peppers. It's a win for the Panthers.
Now contact Peppers agent and tell him to start shopping him while the Panthers do the same. Get a deal done quickly and move on!

I really think Peppers needs to be careful. This whole approach is so countercultural to the Richardson organization's view of Pro-football, loyalty, committment and trust. While trade-outs are part of the game, how you execute it is part and parcel with securing a good trade relationship. In short, the NFL Owners Club is built on IOU's and favors for favors. It will only take a few calls from the sick bed of Jerry Richardson to some of his Owner colleagues and suddenly Peppers (who will get a good deal) will look like a pending Albatrose for suiting NFL teams to overpay. Peppers could have executed this better, esp considering all that the Richardson's have done to keep this guy well paid and lend their support to helping him become a leader (which he will never achieve). People locally forget that amoungst the NFL elite, Mr Richardson is in the Top 5. Goddell, the Rooney Family etal will take what he has to say very seriously as it relates to his view of Pep and his potential to be worth the sum that Pep now demands.
If I were Pep, I'd really be thinking very carefully how I step forward in the next 24.

The Gross deal will get done...it's all about negotiations...we would all do exaclty the same thing Gross is doing...you get the best deal done while you've got the leverage...Panthers Tag #90, send him to the Cowboys for this years 2nd round & next years 1st round pick & a Cowboy cheerleader to be named later

MAProcton

Yeah...not like there hasn't been another CAROLINA PANTHER named Jordan (Carstens.) Seems like you're not looking very hard.

Lewis

One would think the Panthers will get the deal done today wth Gross before the deadline so they can put the "Franchise Tag" on Peppers and then get something for him, but who knows what will happen. Maybe the deal doesn't get done and Peppers walks. It won't be the first time, and certainly not the last, but then I think the Panthers might just put the tag on Gross and let Peppers walk. It wouldn't surprise me at all.

Bronx Mike

Talk about waiting till the last minute. My theory through this whole ordeal has been Gross would wait and milk this as long as he could to squeeze out every dime possible. I cant blame him, get your money...But the thought that Carolina will trade Pep to the Cowboys is a bit odd being that they dont have a 1st rounder. The only way a team gets Pep is by giving up ATLEAST a 1st rounder this year and two 3rd rounders over this year and next. We're entitiled to two 1st rounders as comp. for a franchised player.....no reason to be giving teams discounts.

TrueFan

Can we get an update on the progress of this? Only 3 hours left...

To answer the question about Jordan Gross being on the market. It is possible with the Eagles being over 25 million under the cap and in need of 2 starting Offensive tackles that they could sign Gross and keep the Panthers first round pick. Now there are a lot of teams with Cap Dollars but who knows how many actually have the Greenbacks.

charlemagne

Panther fans are missing the scenario most likely to play out... Panthers sign Gross and then tag Peppers. Peppers won't agree to sign a new long-term deal with a team that the Panthers are willing to trade him to and he stays on the Panthers roster this year killing their salary cap. He holds out the first ten games (only has to play six for it to count as a year of service per NFL contracts) and Panthers waste a lot of money and salary cap on someone who doesn't even suit up. No team is going to offer two 1st round picks for Peppers and the Panthers are going to get stuck holding the bag on this one.

TrueFan

heraldonline.com is reporting that Gross has officially signed his deal.

JBB

deal done
why do you guys not have the inside edge like Darin Gantt???
the herald is always first to report!

Mike

They will sign Gross, and wait till 3:59pm to franchise Peppers... to make him sweat it out. Whether they get two first round picks, or one and a third rounder is immaterial in my opinion, because whatever they get, its better than just letting him walk out the door. I also have to think they already have been pursuing this issue with other teams, and that will factor into how safe they feel about appling the franchise tag to Peppers.

$$$$$$$$$$

Last time the Panthers were involved in a franchise player trade, they lost 2 first round draft choices and ended up with Sean Gilbert. Hopefully they won't just dump Peppers without good value in return. I would rather make him play here another year ala Chad "Ocho Cinco" Johnson than to make a bad trade.
