What an odd story this is, the Julius Peppers/Jordan Gross/Carolina Panthers triangle. The deadline for the Panthers to apply the franchise tag to Peppers or Gross is 4.p.m. today. If the player hasn't signed a contract, and hasn't been franchised by then, he walks.
I've written the phrase "applying the franchise tag" so many times this week that it feels like a wrestling hold. Applying the franchise tag is like applying the figure-four leglock -- you know who I'm talking to Ric Flair -- and just as binding.
I don't know what happens today. I suspect, as I have for months, that the Panthers sign Gross and franchise Peppers. But I don't know what will happen.
I wonder if the Panthers do?
