I like Buzz Peterson as a coach. I thought he should have been considered for the Charlotte job. I like him as a man. He's gracious and unpretentious and never acts as if coaching a basketball team sets him apart from the rest of the human race.
But his loyalty and credibility took a hit Friday when word came out that he was leaving Appalachian State after only one season for UNC-Wilmington.
Peterson has developed a reputation for changing jobs as frequently as sportswriters change golf shirts. What did he see in Boone that surprised him -- he coached there four seasons as a young man. Then he worked his way up to Tulsa and Tennessee. When Tennessee released him, he went to Coastal Carolina and the Charlotte Bobcats and then the Mountaineers.
Maybe Peterson prefers the beach to the mountains. But unless Appalachian State lied to him, or his ASU paychecks bounced, Peterson will be looked upon by other potential employers as a temp. And he should be.

BUZZ IS DEFINITELY A MALCONTENT. MOUNTAINEERS NEVER SHOULD HAVE HIRED HIM BACK, HE CAME BACK TO BOONE AND GOT A LARGE SHARE OF THE ATHLETIC SALARIES PROBABLY CAUSING COACH JERRY MOORE A DECENT RAISE. WE NEED TO LOOK FOR A GOOD HUNGRY COACH WHO WILL BE LOYAL TO THE END. WATCH OUT SEAHAWKS. AS SOON AS THE SUNSCREEN RUNS OUT, BUZZ MAY ALSO.

If he sticks around down there, and turns that program around in a big way, it'll all be forgotten, you know that Tommy.

Feel for App but as a UNCW fan if he turns out around and gets us winning again then leaves in 4-5 years I won't really care. I realize UNCW is a stepping stone job but if he can get us back to competing for NCAA tournaments i'm good with in. Plus he got a pretty good raise it sounds like. 320k plus another 100k in incentives.

The first time he left was fine. The second time is a little bitter, because he fed us this line about being here for a while. I never expected Buzz to stay around for 20 years like Coach Moore, but I did expect a little more loyalty than this. I expect things like this at a mid major program. Coaches use programs to move up. I get that. This feels more like using us to move on than it does about any opportunity that he will have at UNC-W. If he leaves them, don't hire him back. Lesson learned.

Buzz Peterson, the "Larry Brown" of the college ranks.

Tom, I totally agree with you that Peterson has a scarlet letter T tattooed on his rump (and that T is for temp NOT tenure). For those who dont recall, Buzz played at Asheville High in the mountains and I doubt he has any animosities towards the Blue Ridge. My question is...if he had been selected for the 49ers job, wouldn't he still have lost credibility? Or is it just because he went to UNCW?

Buzz is originally from the mountains. He was born and raised in Asheville and of course the point guard on the Dean Smith 82 UNC team that beat Georgetown for the crown after an unknown freshman named Jordan from Wilmington hit the game winner shot.
He was mad about the complete moronic idiot Rose at 2nd rate UNCC passing him up so he obviously wanted to go to a coastal school to get away. Peterson knows the game and was stunned a lowly assist from 500 miles north was picked over him so stupidly.
He coached in the mountains at Tenn too and maybe he is sick as hell of them. Who wouldnt be. Go to the coast coach and retire and to hell with UNCC AppSt and everything else. Lay out on the sand and feel the sea breeze or even fish a bit and relax. Too hell with the rest of the world.
