I don't know the cost of tonight's Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Shane Mosely fight on pay-per-view. I don't need to know. I wouldn't pay $10 to watch.
The only reason the fight is a big deal is because people don't follow boxing. There is nothing special about the fight because there is nothing special about Mosely. He once was very good and now he's not. Mayweather might still be great. But Mosely won't push him. Mosely is tough but old and slow.
Mayweather is the guy who backed out of the fight with Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao is the best fighter, pound-per-pound, in the world, and Mayweather refused to fight him.
Instead of challenging the great one, Mayweather will play the senior tour.
People will buy this fight because Mosely is one of the rare boxers whose name, and to a lesser extent style, people know. It's a lifetime achievement thing.
After Mayweather wins, he will announce that he is the best fighter in the world. Don't believe it. Floyd doesn't. If he did, he wouldn't have backed out of the fight with Manny.
