Where the NFL and racing meet

    Ran into Steve and Angie Smith Saturday afternoon walking along Pit Road at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

    When I asked Smith, the Carolina Panther receiver, if he was a racing fan, he had a good answer.

    "I'm an event fan," he said.

    His job confers access, so he takes advantage of it.

    I like that perspective. One way to learn about the place you live is to experience the institutions for which it is known -- and Charlotte Motor Speedway is one of them.
