This was a ragged out game. But is there anything good you can take away from the Pittsburgh experience? Yes there is.
Tony Pike moved pretty well for a guy 6-6.
On Pittsburgh's first play, rookie defensive end Greg Hardy grabbed quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and dragged him down. Two plays later Derek Landri sacked him. We knew going into camp that the line would be outstanding. But we thought it would be the defensive line.
The Panthers let Armani Edwards line up at quarterback.
The press box food was really good. And there were vegetables and everything. So you fill up your plate with vegetables. And then there's a carving station. What are you going to do? You get another plate.
Head coach John Fox was at his candid best. Asked if the performance of any of his players will help them, he said, "I'm not going to banter with that. We'll look at the tape and make those evaluations and choose the team in due time."
The weather was great.
The preseason has ended.

My guess is Tony Pike will be the odd man out in fight for the #3 QB. Hunter Cantwell might be as well, since it is highly unlikely he would ever be used. They could use Edwards as the emergency #3. They can use that roster spot for a Kick-off specialist. I wouldn't count on Pike being available for the practice squad. I think the Bengals will snag him as the heir apparent to Carson Palmer. He'd probably even chose to sign to their practice squad, over the Panthers. He is from Cincinnatti, the fans love him there, and he does have the potential to be a starting QB 3 to 5 years down the road. Another Aaron Rogers, if you will. He very little chance here with Jimmy Clausen set to be the QB of the future with the Panthers.

I thought it would be the offensive line. Kudos to you.

Sure Tony Pike moved well he but almost got his receivers killed out there. Yes, you throw the ball into places where you know the receiver is going to get hit...but not all the time. Also, if I knew where he was going to pass most of the time, do you think the defense did as well. Dude, don't look at your receiver as soon as you get the ball in your hands. Promising but a long way from where he needs to be.

Well Mike now you know why he was still available. The book on Pike is he is at least one season from being a backup and a couple from being a starter.
I was pretty happy with the play of our second string D against the Steelers number one O. In fact if anyone has some worry after this game it is Pittsburgh. Our 2s hung with their ones pretty well.
I thought Armanti acquitted himself well and while I saw another columnist wrote that we'd never see the Mountaineer package in season I think he is dead wrong. They almost have to run it to justify the pick.
Now for the real season.

To confused fan- I think comparing Pike to Aaron Rogers is a bit premature, but you do make a good point about using Edwards as the emergency QB and cutting both Cantwell and Pike to make room for Todd Carter.
Ben- glad someone else noticed that. Tom is embarrassing.

Yea well us lowly peons and peasants dont get the luxury and privleges of bragging about VIP treatment in the press boxes and free food thats takes multiple plates. May you gain an extra 100 lbs of gutt and butt.

The Bengals have a backup in place with Carson Palmers little brother Jordan. Im tired of the same JerkOff that keeps saying Tony Pike is the heir apparent for the Bengals when its just speculation, and only because Pike played for the Bearcats.
Let it go.
