When old fails, we love new. John Fox didn't fail as coach of the Carolina Panthers, but his 2010 team did.
So it was fun at Bank of America Stadium Saturday to see new. We saw a reverse, saw the empty backfield and saw the absence of a third-and-long draw play. We did not see one all night.
It was fun to see Armanti Edwards make two nice punt returns, the first of them dazzling, and catch a 36-yard pass. It was fun to watch Cam Newton make his NFL exhibition debut and see rookie receiver Kealoha Pilares sprint down the left sideline with a touchdown pass.
I have no idea how effective the Panthers will be in 2011. It's too early. There are too many variables.
Carolina beat the New York Giants 20-10, and fans had a good time watching the Panthers do it.
Football, at least on this night, was fun at Bank of America Stadium. And when was the last time you could say that?
