If you're a boxing fan, May 2 will feel like an international holiday. We finally got the fight we wanted. We got it five years after we wanted it. But we'll take it anyway.
The great Floyd Mayweather, 47-0 with 26 knockouts, will fight the great Manny Pacquiao, 57-5-2 with 38 knockouts.
I feared the fight would not take place because Floyd has long avoided Manny. They had a chance meeting Jan. 27 at a Miami Heat game, and the meeting appears to be the catalyst for the fight.
The Heat no longer are having a bad season.
The fight is at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Floyd's town.
By fight night peripheral fans and first-time fans and fans who turned away from the sport will be taking sides. Floyd-Manny is being billed as the biggest fight of all time. Every year or two a fight is billed as the biggest of all time. This one might be, at least in terms of the money it generates.
Floyd is a boxer, among the greatest who ever lived. Manny is a relentless puncher and of course he will attack.
Floyd is older. He turns 37 Tuesday. Manny is 36.
Floyd is taller, 5-8 to Manny's 5-6 1/2.
Manny has more miles on him. He's been hit much more. Floyd is as good a defensive fighter as -- who is or was better? He's like a running back that avoids the big hit.
If you love the sport, you also love the local cards. Roy Jones Jr. will headline a stunning pro boxing card March 6 at Cabarrus Arena and Events Center. There are at least two potential champions on the undercard.
On March 6-7 the N.C. Golden Gloves will take place at Charlotte's Sugaw Creek Recreation Center.
So in March we get the biggest fight card Charlotte has had in more than 20 years. In May we get boxing's Super Bowl/World Cup/Olympics on pay-per-view TV.
I'm in.
Tom, It reads like you're betting om Mayweather. Me, too. I'm not a fan of TMT, but you can't hide talent. #BoxingNeedsThisFight

And most of us let out a combined YAWN. Who cares what these two old men do? That fight may have been a good one years back, but Manny now is getting beat up like a poorly growing schoolchild. It just shows how out of touch boxing is in 2015.
