The Jan. 16 Caption Winner!
King Kong and blondes just seem to go together. That, at least, is the connection some of the best entries in our inaugural Charlotte Observer Cartoon Caption Contest made this week.
The winning caption:
"Honest -- I'm just here to protect Kaye McGarry!"
--submitted by Katie Williams of Charlotte.
Her caption refers, of course, to the security-conscious Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board member, and that body's latest spat. She'll be receiving our grand prize -- in fact, it's the only one we've got -- the original cartoon with her caption lettered below it.
Our runners-up:
"I asked for a blonde and you brought me…Ric Flair?"
-- submitted by Kurt Sullivan of Mooresville
"What do you mean you don't care if we did it this way in New York?
--- submitted by Gene Lazo of Matthews
"Tammy Faye? I said Fay Wray!"
-- submitted by H. Stephen Shoemaker of Charlotte and (in only a slightly different version) by Jim Roberts of Charlotte
Thank you all for your entries! We received well over 200 captions to our first cartoon. Readers used the image of King Kong perched on the Bank of America Tower as a jumping-off point for a variety of topics, including uptown parking, the Panthers, the new baseball stadium, the banks, the mayor, and the world-class status of Charlotte. So many folks mentioned the NASCAR Hall of Fame that they've inspired a racy image for next week's cartoon. We'll both post that here and publish it in the Observer Monday. In the meantime, here, in no particular order, is a sampling of some of the better lines from this week:
"You call 60 stories 'world class'?"
"Do you know where I can find Lynn Wheeler?"
"They accused me of being a spy from Wachovia."
"Who, me? An illegal immigrant?"
"....and then she told me that my MBNA credit card wasn't valid anymore."
"Frankly, compared to where I'm from, the nightlife here is pretty tame."
"Hey guys, I'm just looking for a parking place."
"I know this isn't New York. It's not the New Yorker either."
"What? India??"
"They'll try anything to get that NASCAR museum!"
'Twas Boosters killed the beast.
"I got lost at Queens and Queens."
"That's your idea of intelligent design?"
"Charlotte? No wonder I got taxed for loitering."
"Hey!...............it's the only safe place in Charlotte!!"
"Well which is it.......uptown or downtown?"

The caption you choose is borderline racist in my opinion, you are real close too the line on this one.

The winner was a stretch and pretty obscure for us to understand out here in the hinterlands...at least the Fay Wray and Tammy Faye caption was understandable. --- Stick to the drawing and let someone else work on the editorial caption side.

“Write the Caption” is an excellent idea. Reading the captions was an excellent for me to end my long week. Thanks for the humor!
