Welcome to You Write the Caption, the Charlotte Observer cartoon caption contest, an opportunity to test your wit and win a prize. Each Monday, Observer editorial cartoonist Kevin Siers will post a political cartoon that needs a caption and invite readers to write one.  To learn more about our contest and see our caption writing guidelines, please click here.

Enter as many times as you wish.   Originality counts.  While sometimes a drawing may suggest the same idea to everyone, we only have one cartoon a week to award someone, so we can't have any ties. Political edginess is encouraged, but the caption can't be too bawdy or libelous for a family newspaper.  The winning caption will be the one our judges think is funniest. Their decision, however misguided, is final.

To submit your caption on-line, just click here to e-mail us!  Please include your mailing address and daytime phone number. For those of you who have the caption-writing bug bad and need even more outlets for your addiction, check out the caption writing contest sponsored by McClatchy newspapers at  their Washington bureau's site. This bi-weekly contest features cartoons drawn by top political cartoonists from among McClatchy's 31 newspapers.  While there, also check out their cartoon galleries featuring daily national editorial cartoons from this same talented bunch.

The August 6 Cartoon Caption Winner!

Sierscaption08_06 Click image to enlarge.

The winner:

"After Murdoch's edit, there's nothing 'left'!"

-- Tom Haines of Charlotte

The runners-up:

"It's a News Corpse paper!"

-- Ross Levin, Charlotte

"Well honey, it's the Fox News edition.  All headlines and no story."

-- David Merritt, Charlotte

"Perhaps the Mac version would have more news than the Windows edition."

-- Carolyn Hudson, Columbia, SC

“Murdoch did say he’d make the editorial process transparent!”

-- Ross Bailey, Cornelius

Thank you for all your entries.  Due to an editing error, Mr. Haines' winning caption was published incorrectly in Monday's Observer.  The version here is the correct one.

Here's a selection of some of the other better lines we received this week:

"Paris Hilton didn't make the news today!"

"It’s a special edition highlighting all the successes of the Bush administration."

"What'd expect? Dow Jones sold the paper on margin."

"What's your problem? Rupert has been using see-through models in his other tabloids for years."

"Looks like he's finally giving the left and the right the same amount of coverage."

"It's great, they started listing only the stocks that went up."

"I cut out the articles about Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan."

"The Wall Street Journal has adopted the same format for reporting business news that The Observer uses."

"I like the Journal a lot better now that Murdoch has gotten rid of all that news I disagreed with!"

"I see they removed all of the stories about Wall Street cheaters."

"I told you it was a 'bear' market dear!"

"I've heard of a new owner "gutting" a newspaper but this is ridiculous!"

"This way, you can read the paper and watch FOXnews at the same time."

"I didn't realize that the Wall Street Journal used to feature so many stories critical of Rupert Murdoch."

"It's more 'fair and balanced' now, dear."

"All the news that's fit to print!"

"No news is good news!"
