Welcome back to You Write the Caption, the Charlotte Observer cartoon caption contest, an opportunity to test your wit and win a prize. Each Monday, Observer editorial cartoonist Kevin Siers will post a political cartoon that needs a caption and invite readers to write one. To learn more about our contest and see our caption writing guidelines, please click here.
Enter as many times as you wish. Originality counts. While sometimes a drawing may suggest the same idea to everyone, we only have one cartoon a week to award someone, so we can't have any ties. Political edginess is encouraged, but the caption can't be too bawdy or libelous for a family newspaper. The winning caption will be the one our judges think is funniest. Their decision, however misguided, is final.
To submit your caption on-line, just click here to e-mail us! Please include your mailing address and daytime phone number. To mail your caption to the Observer, address it to You Write the Caption, Editorial Department, The Charlotte Observer, P.O. Box 30308, Charlotte, NC 28230-0308. Submissions must reach us by noon, Thursday, August 9.
We'll post the winner's name and caption and the runners-up here Friday afternoon and publish them in the Observer next Monday. You'll also be able to find here each Friday additional entries that we just didn't have room to print in the paper, plus have the opportunity to participate in an forum discussion about the captions --your chance to agree or disagree with the judges, or even suggest additional captions. The winning writer will be mailed the original cartoon art with the caption added.
For those of you who have the caption-writing bug bad and need even more outlets for your addiction, check out the caption writing contest sponsored by McClatchy newspapers at their Washington bureau's site. This bi-weekly contest features cartoons drawn by top political cartoonists from among McClatchy's 31 newspapers. While there, also check out their cartoon galleries featuring daily national editorial cartoons from this same talented bunch.
Good luck, and have fun!
